i am in the market for a american stratocaster. i've tried the american standard and the highway one. i think i like the h1 better but the fact that the guitar is made of many pieces of wood bothers me. also the american standards are all american and hold their value better. i really want an electric (i currently play acoustic) and i'd have to wait longer for an american standard and i wouldn't be able to get a really nice amp with the A.S. at first. my main concern is that i want a guitar that will last me a lifetime (hopefully. or at least a LONG time). i like the nitro, the big frets and the headstock (the pickups are nice too) but i like the legacy, higher quality, and some of the upgrades of the american standard. do you think it's worth the wait?

Having played both, I can attest they are both nice Stratocasters. If your budget doesn't allow for the American Deluxe, the Hwy 1 won't disappoint.

If you want the guitar to last YOU a lifetime, what do you care about resale value? My "lifetime" Strat cost me $12K in parts, including a hardshell case, and I can't sell it for even half that. But why the hell would I want to? It has my name on the headstock!

Also, multiple pieces of wood don't mean a thing in a solid body. Some one-piece bodies are dead, some 7-piece bodies sing.

Just get the guitar YOU like. The amp is more important to the sound, anyway.

What you're essentially saying is, "Gee, I really like everything about the Highway One, but I think the American is worth more." Who cares? Buy the Highway One and a good amp, play and be happy.

i can afford both... eventually. it's all a matter of time. i'm just wondering if it would be worth the wait for an american standard. and also how much do multiple pieces of wood affect the guitar other that appearance?

I don't see how an American Series will last any longer than a Highway One.

The Highway One is one piece of wood. Not only is it one piece of wood, but you can see the wood through the transparent nitrocellulose paint job. It's also American made, except for some of the hardware like the tuners, bridge, pickups etc. that may be made in Mexico, but I can tell you all the parts work well. It's not like Mexican hardware sucks. Although on my wish list are Fender/Shaler tuners, a roller nut, and SCN noiseless pickups, to go with my Hotrod Deluxe tube amp. Maybe someday . . . Mexican Standard Strats are the ones that are many pieces of wood.

stratcat58, regardless of what you think you're seeing in the grain on your guitar, I can assure you that the Highway Ones are NOT single-piece bodies. Even the American Series guitars are at least two. Even in the Custom Shop, one-piece bodies are rare.

that makes me feel better knowing that most guitars aren't single pieces.

It's true... one- piece bodies are almost non existent, HC. Just think about how big a piece of lumber you would need to cut and entire Strat body from a single piece of wood, and you'll get some idea of how expensive it would be.

There isn't any advantage to cutting a solid body guitar from one piece of wood, either. It doesn't sound better, resonate better, play better or even look better.

i was watching a gibson factory tour on youtube and they looked like they were made of two solid pieces- one maple (top) and mohogany (back). so i guess that's why gibsons cost an arm and a leg  but i guess that's still technically 2 pieces not 1 (but it's two different woods) i'm not turning this into a gibby discussion or dissing fender i just thought i'd point that out.

thanks guys i'm defintely goin with the h1. that way i can make all of the upgrades i want in the future and have it still cost less :) . also i like being different and the highway one is unique and isn't quite as popular as the standard.

I have an american Deluxe and it compares very well to my Clapton. If you can't swing the money for the Deluxe, the highway 1 will do nicely!
