There was the '56 Brownie of Layla fame which preceded the Blackie, and was played by him through his tour with the Dominoes and appears with him on the cover of his first solo CD. That guitar now resides in the museum at the Experience Music Project in Seattle, WA, having been purchased by Paul Allen for $450K at the first auction. The old Blackie followed that. After the original Blackie was retired....his stage guitars have been finish variations of the first and second generation signature series guitars, Early on they were pewter or red, and then the black finish was reintroduced and he stayed with that for awhile. There's also been a white, a gold-leaf, the Crash guitars, Mercedes Blue, a Ferrari Grigio Silverstone, and a lately, a Daphne blue, all with the 25db midboost and noiseless pickups, the Lace Sensors having been replaced about 8 years ago.

Other interesting examples of his Strat collection, some of which were sold at auction, are found in the Christies catalogs for those two events, but rarely, if ever, appeared on stage with him.

All his stage Stratocasters are Masterbuilt and are 'tweaked' to his specs. In the main, these days, a conventional tone pot (no TBX), no signature on the headstock, and perhaps a different finishing of the neck .

What prompts the question??
