What kind of wood, pickups, amplifier etc. do you need to get that "Stevie sound"? That not as twangy sound. The sound that Stevie and John mayer has. The sound that this guy, Clas Yngstrom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afA3bJM6 ... ed&search= has. I would love to have a guitar to sound that way!

A Strat made of virtually any wood, with just about any single coil pickups can sound like that. It's mostly the choice of amp and stomp box, which in this case sounds like a Tubescreamer or boo-teek clone thereof to me.

That's about 80 percent of it. The rest is a matter of how you play it.

I agree with Gravity Jim and just googled and found out some more info on this guy. He seems to be quite well known over there.

I play a Highway One through a solid state amp (cheap but puts out a lot of sound). Play clean and turn it all the way up and it distorts just slightly. Now turn down the tone knobs to 4, and it's a thick BB like sound out of my Highway One. I can't get that crazy jet sound Clapton has on some songs without a better amp. However, turn up the tone nob to 9 or 10 and go with mid/bridge and I can get the riff from the anti-drug blues song Cocaine from treatment center sponsor Clapton.

Also I do believe SRV used heavier gauged strings...and High action. and he went through amps like a hot knife in butter which tells me they were cranked often.

This pic should give you an idea of where the tone comes from.

After you die reincarnate as SRV or maybe a 62 reissue strat, heavy
strings and 40watt Fender combo will do fine.
Do you people ever read guitarmagazines ?

Why bother if this is the kind of misinformation they print?

Look at that pic two posts above. Does that look like a 40-watt Fender to you? And how many modifications did his Fender amps go through? (Answer: dozens.) What about his Dumble? His collection of Tubescreamers? Suppose that had anything to do with it?

You obviously don't have to be "reincarnated" or own a '62 since there are thousands of players ripping off Stevie's Strat And A Hat tone every hour of every day. Most players get close to that sound running a Tubescreamer into an amp that takes pedals well. The rest is technique.

People should concentrate on their techique and feel and create a sound they like, Stevie did !
Buying the same stuff as your hero is no guarantee you'll get the same
sound, it's in the brain and the fingers too.
Of course Stevie used many amps, but if you're on a budged a Strat,
tubescreamer and 40watt amp is a not a bad choice.

Beste Jacob,

I know what you mean. Jimi fan for about 35 years, like his live sounds
especialy ''Band of Gypsys'', own a Digetech Jimi Hendrix Experience
pedal but still sound like me. Big SRV and Jimmy Vaughan fan to.
Clapton,Trower,Gallagher,Beck,Page,Greene,Guy,Akkerman,Vai,
Satiani and Joe Bonamassa etc. Got my own sound now, less distortion,
less pedals, small amp(VooxAC15TBX) still having fun.

Groeten(dutch) greetings

Peter

You are not alone. My best friend asked the same question.

This is what we came up with:

1. Highway 1 3-color-sunburst body, but an American Series body will do in a pinch. The more that the guitar can brieth the better. No paint would be the bast way.
2. A rosewood neck. This has a warmer sound than Maple.
3. Jumbo Frets.
4. Texas Special pick ups
5. Vintage bridge.
6. Bone nut.
7. thick strings.
8. Keep the guitar tuned to Eb (half a step down from concert pitch).

A good tube amp. I myself love the Peavey Delta Blues Amp. The Blues DeVil is another great amp.

After everything is said and done you still might not get Stevie's sound. Part of what made his sound was "SRV" himself.

My roomate and I have made our own home built Strats with the same parts and though the guitars sound the same we play very differently. My attack is much heavier than his. I end up sounding more like Albert King and he sounds like SRV.

Also find out who Albert Listened to: Peopl like Albert King were a big influence on SRV.
