Standard disclaimer here...this is just my opinion as always.

My question to you would be why specifically are you looking to do this? Did you play a Strat with a bone nut and found it to be an advantage in some way or did you simply hear someone say "bone nuts are better"? It's been my experience that a properly filed and properly installed nut is one of the least problematic parts of a guitar. In this case, the materially really doesn't make that much of a difference at all...plastic, bone, graphite, steel rollers or brass. I have guitars that have all of these (except for brass) and there's not really a lot of difference at all. In fact I put the LSR roller nut on my Strat and honestly, for the trouble and expense if I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't....it really didn't make that big a difference at all.

Now I'm not saying that bone is "bad" here by any means but unless you have a very specific reason for doing this, I doubt you're really going to notice much of a difference. If you decide to do this anyways and you are taking this to a tech, make sure the tech KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING! If for example you use 10 gauge strings and the tech just slaps on a nut that was cut from the factory for 8's, you ARE going to have problems, regardless of the material. The same thing applies if you are going to do it yourself...it's not as simple as just buying a new nut and slapping it on. You must make sure the height of the nut is correct and that the string slots are properly filed for the gauge of string you use. If the nut is actually set into the fretboard like many Strats are, you will also need to make sure you get one of the correct thickness (and/or do some filing there as well).

Again, just my $.02 worth but personally I don't think they're really worth the cost and/or effort.

L8r,
Jim

Hi Brett, just so you know, anything goes with guitar mods, it is just tweaking your instrument to your personal taste, and speaking of this, did you consider a brass nut and saddle as well? Here's a link for you. Good luck. 8)

My Luthier talked to me about TUSQ nuts. He says there work very well.
