if you want the fender sound, get a fender amp. I love the Bassman sound. But yeah, you can get a good Fender tube amp for less than 1000.

Super Champ in fact will be less than $500 and it is a great amp. Great tube tone with some nice overdrive channels and effects..

Good point. Despite my initial hatred of mine i'm slowly starting to like it. Its just right for practice and stage.

Niki, didn't you do some mods to yours lately or is that someone else I'm thinking of? Also, what is the status of your deluxe strat ?

Im picking up the deluxe on tuesday as a birthday present to myself. That has taken some justification to the missus. I'm getting it as an investment more than a player guitar. It hasnt got any feature my customclassic hasnt got. Keep it 20years and sell it.
I did mod my blues jr. Just on the middle pot control. With the pot on zero it is zero mid rather than being like a blackface amp where theres always some middle in the mix even with the control on zero. Its a decent mod that only adds to the amp and takes nothing away. I did muck about with a few different speakers but didnt get much improvement. The emminence speaker isnt so bad. Undoubtedly there are better speakers out there but i'm not going to spend £120 on a jensen when i come across old speakers all the time. I'll just keep waiting and trying whatever comes available.

Hot Rod DeVille or Deluxe amps are nice for a wide range of Fender tones. My one buddy has the 60 watt 4-10" DeVille, which is a really versatile amp. I have played thru it quite a bit, and really like it. It doesn't have super high gain, but it sounds like you don't need that.

What the problem with the Vox? I thought they made very high quality tube amps? Does it have a clean channel? How does the strat sound through it. As a rule of thumb I start with all controls, except volume, about half way then adjust to taste

use the high gain channel with the gain turned down somewhere below half way, put the tone controls in the middle or half way. How does it sound? It should give you a nice dirty blues sound there. If the gain is still fizzing, remove more. If it still has the scooped sound, add some mids and remove some highs. It should warm up nicely

Experiment, I bet you have some amazing tones just waiting to be unleashed. One thing I found is that more complex amps take more time tweaking. The results are usually worth the effort, plus you learn what makes your amp tick. My ADA preamp has 10 tube voices, its like a 10 channel amp. At first I thought only two of the sounds were usable, one of the cleanest cleans and the highest gain. Now that I have taken some time with it, I have found that all the voices can produce different and usable tones if I expriement with them. I start each one as described above, gradually tweaking in the best tone through the gain, and tone controls, and then from there I can mix in effects .

I believe the amps he has are the modeling Vox's. Eveyone's tossing up some good suggestions, but you should be able to come somehwhat close to good clean through that Vox. I can get some good one's through my Line 6. I'd probably trade in 50Vt and pick up a Pro Jr and keep the XL.
