How about a company offering a buffet (not jimmy) style of guitar for a reasonable price?

Offer several body woods, finishes, pups, hardware, neck radius, fretboards, frets, etc.

You just pick out of the available parts for your own guitar.

you could all out design your own here as well: http://www.usacustomguitars.com/virtualguitar.html and just specify pickups, but that would have pretty much everything else... you cant save the picture though, so you have to do a print screen selection and paste it into paint to post it on here... cool site though, don't have time to design one at the moment though

I'm into Strats and playing blues, so for me it's pretty easy to design the perfect guitar. This is a budget approach because that's the way I think. First, I would start with a Highway One because I'm into mine. I like the neck radius, the rolled edges, the jumbo frets although they call for a smooth hand to avoid bending when playing unbent notes, because they're so great for vibrato and bends. So that's alder and rosewood. I like the growl from the rosewood tone when I'm playing a lot of passages in neck/mid.

Now, time to upgrade the hardware. First, load the trem wth five springs. Since I added two springs to my synchronized tremolo on my Highway One, it never wanders but it gives me vibrato if I need it from the trem. I would put stainless steel saddles in the vintage bridge for the added sustain and invincibility. Next, I would get Schaler/Fender tuners and replace the stock Mexican Fender tuners on the Highway One so it stays in tune forever no matter how much bending is needed. Next, I would put on the roller nut with tiny ball bearings that's on the Beck and eliminates resistance when bending. Next I would load the Highway One with new noiseless pickups. I'm thinking Somarium Cobalt Noiseless, although I haven't made a decision about it. I love the sound Clapton gets from Vintage noiseless like on "Riding With The King" with BB King where Clapton's guitar sounds wicked through his tube amp, like a jet. On the other hand, Fender's really wild about SCN and putting them on the Custom Shop so I'm thinking Clapton may go with that later, too. When I played those SCN noiseless at Wild West a while ago, I noticed that a lot of my little glitches like touching the g string while bending didn't cause a lot of the usual noise problems, but every note rang out good, so that's a worthwhile upgrade for me. Helps me sound good. I want to stay all Fender with this guitar and so I think the SCN will be the way to go.

What's that get you - a personal Custom Shop Pro, missing only the greasebucket on the neck. Actually, sounds like a plan after I buy a new amp soon. I'll make sure to buy some of this stuff at Wild West and let them make sure it's set up like a Custom Shop Pro after they put it on, too. The guys at Wild West are aces.

Thats a pretty axe man. Hows the Bloodwood as tonewood? I've never seen it used before.

Crying Strat, the Bloodwood feels and sounds great!
first of all, I love raw exotic wood! I have a solid rosewood on another project and I love it! I actually sold the korina/bloodwood and I still regret it! the Korina/Bloodwood combo worked really well, and the tone and sustain was amazing!

I am almost done with my latest project, Swamp Ash with a Wenge Neck and a Ebony Fretboard! I can't wait to play it! :)

I know that this is not a stratocaster, but still one of my favorite guitars:
Hollow Black Korina Body, Solid Rosewood Neck, Macassar Ebony Fingerboard.
Rio Grande BBQ & Texas HB's! sounds like heaven!

oh, and I used licensed fender parts only for all of the above, and I used mainly Warmoth parts.

I have to dream guitars.

The 1st I built: Strat
5lbs alder body Stained only
"v" shaped maple w/ rosewood board med-jumbo frets and bone nut
Texas Special pick ups
vintage bridge.
locking tuning keys
tortisshell pick guard.
partchment colored parts.

Of all my Strats this guitar is the one everyone loves the most.

2nd
'62 tele custom body in 3-color sunburst
HB in the neck, Broadcaster PU in the Bridge.
six saddle Brass bridge (all of it).
5 way switch for 5 settings using 2 pick ups
1. HB
2. HB coil tapped
3. HB and bridge
4. HB coil tapped and bridge
5. Bridge

"V" shaped maple neck
mid-range boost pull/push pot (kind of like the clapton Strat)
This guitar is currently being built for me.
