I have a guy who wants to sell me a CIJ that he said is NOT an import, but was bought in Japan and brought to the states. He believes it to be around mid 90's. as far as i know, and i'm pretty sure, they started using CIJ on the imports in the late 90's. But were the strats made for sale in asia always labeled CIJ, or did they change to CIJ at the same time the imports did? Also, where can i find the serial numbers to date 90's japan strats?

Look at or near the bottom of this page on this site and you will find info on guitars made in japan.Search the rest of the site for even more info as it is a large web site, mostly vintage stuff.

That doesn't seem to mention CIJ serial numbers. It only shows MIJ numbers up to '96, which would seem to coincide with what stratohawk said about MIJ being used till that year. but no info on CIJ strats.

By the way, there IS one way to know whether it was an import or not....if it's alder instead of basswood. One thing i do know if that fender never imported any '62's that were anything but basswood in the 90's. In the 80's a lot of things happened, but in the 90's the only '62 type strats i ever saw that were imported by fender were all basswood.

Anyways, this one is alder which was very obvious by the look. It's a burst so it was easy to tell, and a real nice body at that. having said all that, can i get some opinions on what you think a mint CIJ '62 thats alder is worth, assuming it's at least 10 years old, bone stock and with a good straight neck and all? i really don't need it, but i do want it and i just want to know whether it's a killer deal or not. rather than say what he's asking i'd like to get your unbiased opinions first.
