Juat got a new HWY 1, and solved a 'dead string' issue. now I'm trying to get the action set to a reasonable level without the B abd E strings fretting out when doing full step bends from 15th to 17th frets. I went through the Fender setup guide, and there's no way to get as good of action as they spec without the fretting-out problem. I've been told the small fretboard radius is the problem, but it doesn't seem normal to me. (BTW, 9.5" radius)

Thanks,
Pat

Yes that is the problem..
take off the neck and buy a flat or compound radius replacement from Warmoth!

Maybe you can find an EJ neck. Nice 12.5 radius.

I have never fretted out, and I don't understand this. Do you PULL the strings or PUSH them. I have always pushed them on strings 1-4 and pulled on strings 5 & 6. I bend the $#!+ out of them at times. I have never fretted out. Is this just something I learned different in the beginning, or is there some other reason?

Philbert, same as you. Push on the top 4, pull on the lower two (pitch wise). Never had this problem on any other guitar, unless it was just set up poorly...It might be going back to GC...

I bend like crazy on my Highway One and I've never fretted out. I played it and did a lot of bends in the store before I brought it home. It's perfect. Even when I had the action flush after I put a couple of extra springs in the tremolo to stabilize it, I've never fretted out.

I played a broken Highway One at Best Buy before I went to GC. It fretted out, the knobs were broken etc. A Fender factory worker from Corona was hanging out there. I talked with him about the Highway One and he said they built them good and do a lot of quality control and so it definitely shouldn't fret out, which is really bad. But, the one at Best Buy was doing it and he said sometimes they get tweaked in shipping or something happened. He said if you need to fix fretting out they sand the frets. I'm not sure how they do it. I would take it back to GC and tell them to fix the fretting out problem, or just get another one.

I don't have any problems fretting out on my Highway 1 either. My 1986 MIJ '72 RI Strat has a 7.25in. radius and I don't have probems with it either.

Do you mean dead fretts? How does the neck look? Is the TRUSS ROD too to tight? Mine needed a little tightning, and the action improved quite a bit by making the adjustment. No dead fretts, no buzz, and low action. I can't stress how much improvement this adjustment can make.

Here's a question about playing a Highway One Strat for Chet and anyone who's got some good advice. Plenty of times, when I'm bending the little e string or the b string, I'll get stuck in a rut of setting the g string to buzzing on my Highway One. It's not all the time, but every now and again I get stuck in a rut of doing it, like when I was younger and used to play a lot of tennis and I'd get in a rut of hitting the ball into the net a few times. I didn't notice this problem when I played a Beck and I noticed on the Highway One video that they set the strings a little closer together in the center of the neck to avoid going off when bending. I want to improve my technique to avoid the buzzing g string. Right now, I primarily bend the e or b under the g (and when I do it right I avoid any problems with a buzzing g). Also, I will sometimes bend up the g string to avoid any contact while bending the e string or b string. Any suggestions on how to improve my technique? I've picked up things over the years from books and friends who played and taught me some stuff, but I'm basically self taught going back to the early 1980s with the first d chord.

While making your bend, deaden the other strings with another finger.

Thanks a lot Chet. I usually do that as a last resort after I start a commotion! I'm going to work on my dexterity with some scales and get better at that. You da man!

I play a Mexican classic series '60s stratocaster with 2mm clearence at
the 12th fret (high E-string) and the A and low E somewhat higher, 2,5
to 3mm's.
On any electric guitar i never go lower than 2mm on the high E.
Better sound and less buzzes and no problems bending you're strings.
I use .010'' to .046''s. from D'Addario and set the p'ups not to close to the
strings to avoid stratitis (magnetic pull), it also makes it easier to intonate
the guitar.

Peter from Holland/Europe.
