Very Cool BigJay!!!!

On my 1986 Fender MIJ '72 RI I have the pickups even with the pickguard. The pickups are a set of WCR SR's and are HOT, Think somewhere between P-90 and Humbucker. They sound absolutely fabulous down that low.
I also lowered the pickups even with the pickup rings on my 2001 Gibson LP Standard. Pickups in this guitar are a WCR BetSet with the Peter Green mod. Again I am loving the tone from the new pickup height.

I'm still experimenting with my other 2 Strats on how low should I go.

This is the reason I recommended the article in the May issue of Guitar Player Mag. on page 131 in the American issue. It goes into great detail about all things pickup. It is also written well enough that a novice like me can understand everything!

is there a link to that story....sounds like an interesting read...

cafeathers,

Thanks for the tip. It worked out great. I was debating on switching my bridge p-up to something a little hotter than what I have now, but I see it was my p-up height that was making it sound a little thin. This tip may hold me off on modifying my Fender Strat for now. Keep these pearls of wisdom coming please.

As I said in another thread I noticed in a Jimi Hendrix video that his pickups were adjusted almost even with his pickguard.
Last night I got out my 1986 MIJ '68RI Strat and dropped the pickup height to that level.
I was pleasantly surprised. The tone was clearer and there was some added sustain. Then there was the Strat Quack, It was fabulous!!! When I added in some distortion there was no question that I had stumbled onto a new way to adjust my pickups.

So, I grabbed my 10lb 2001 Gibson LP Standard, dropped the pickup level down to even with the pickup rings. SWEEEET!!!!!! My LP sustained like crazy before, you should hear the sustain now!!! The little bit of mud that I got when adding distortion is gone.

I highly recommend everyone try dropping their pickup height. Report back here with your thoughts.

thanks, that is a great idea. have you tried it on your lefty hwy 1?

Lowering the height, does it improve harmonics?
What is the factory default height? Do you recomend lovering it more than the factory setting?

On my strat the bridge humbucker is a Dimarzio tonezone, which is a much hotter pickup than the other two in the guitar, and I am now MUCH happier with the tone (and volume in comparision to the other pu) since I lowered it down to almost flush with the pickguard.

My strat came with the pickups very low, it sounded great in the store when I bought it. I also recently lowered them a bit. Yes, I think you can go too low. You want to find the sweet spot, where you have all the tone, and decent output. Start with the bridge pu, and then adjustthe others to match output of the bridge

The Ibanez Joe Sat series have great harmonics.I tested one at the store & it was awesome. However the one i own is not v sensitive to harmonics.I wonder if the pup height has something to do or is it something in the setup?
