EMG recommends not grounding the strings. However, I always ground them anyway as this practice makes the guitar's circuit even quieter. As to the potential electrocution aspect(s), this should all been sorted out prior to playing, regardless.

FWIW, everyone keeps referring to the EMG jack as a, "stereo" jack". It is NOT a, "stereo jack". Rather, it is a three conductor jack where a second ground is engaged once the jack is plugged into. In this particular situation, this second ground activates the battery and thus, the circuit as a whole. Conversely, unplugging from the jack disconnects the circuit, thus preventing the battery from discharging while the guitar is not being amplified.

I can't imagine that grounding my SV's to the bridge would make them quieter. They produce functionally zero noise as it is.

As for the "stereo" thing,, well... isn't it just a matter of what you wire it for? I suppose you could call it a TRS jack, if you wanted to.

It does make them quieter and ensures they retain minimal noise in questionable electrical environments such as bars, pubs, auditoriums, etc. where older wiring and/or florescent and neon lights can be a problem.

With the, "stereo thing", the placement of the prongs on the jack determine whether they will accommodate two positive (for stereo) wires and one negative one or, two negative wires and one positive one (for activating a circuit such as a preamp). The type required for say, a set of headphones vs. an EMG circuit are examples of the former and the latter. They are not the same nor can they be modified to serve either function although they both are indeed, examples of TRS connectors.

They are in and sounding good...working on the setup now....does anyone know about string height with these EMG SA pu's?

Thanks for all the help so far as well...very helpful and informative.

When you say, "string height", I presume you mean how close to the strings the EMGs could or should be. My rule of thumb is as follows:

Turn the guitar so that the high E side is facing you. On the high E string, fret the highest fret on your guitar. Leaving your finger on that highest fret, raise each EMG up to where each is about a dime's thickness away from the high E string.

Next, turn the guitar so that the low E side is facing you. On the low E side, fret the 12th fret, not the highest. Leaving your finger on that 12th fret, raise each EMG up to where each is about a nickel's thickness away from the high E.

After this, you can adjust to your individual taste if the above doesn't work for you.

Once all this is completed, you will want to synchronize the magnetic flux of the three pickups. This will prevent, "Stratitis". Here's what you do:

Lay the guitar face up in your lap. With both hands, gently push all 6 strings down at the same time until all 6 strings are touching the top of all 3 pickups at the same time. Once accomplished, SLOWLY and EVENLY begin releasing the hand pressure which had the strings touching the pickups until the strings have raised back up, returning to their normal position. Do this with every string change. As a matter of fact, this practice should be applied to all Strats, regardless of the brand of pickups.

Remember to unplug the guitar when not using it to prolong battery life. Typical battery life is anywhere from 10 months to 14 months, depending on your personal playing habits. You will know when the battery is tired as there will be a volume drop and the pickups will begin to sound just plain awful. Sometimes, they will even make weird noises.

Good luck and if you have any more questions or concerns, just give us a holler!
