so i brought my MIM deluxe in to my local GC for a set up a few weeks ago. I went to pick it up last week and noticed the low E side of the bridge was set significantly higher than than the high E side. I showed it to the person who brought it out for me and they said "no problem, we'll leave it for the tech to fix next time he's in". I went in again today to pick it up, and it still had the same problem. fortunately its not my only guitar, and its not my american standard. otherwise i'd be without a guitar for quite some time now. anyone have an idea of why the bridge would be like this? or why it couldn't be fixed when I pointed it out to them?

It sounds like you need to learn to do yourself or find another tech.

That was your first mistake.

From what I understand (at least at my local GC), if none of the sales personnel (who all claim to be guitar techs) can't handle a setup or whatever the task may be on an instrument during the normal course of their day's presence there, the task is then auctioned out to what I must presume are the local hacks where the lowest bidder gets a subcontract to do it.

Two different times while I was there, my, "go to guy" was in the process of turning down two potential minor modification jobs. I caught him both times right before he was just about to proclaim to the customer, "It'll have to go back to the factory". Pulling him aside, I explained to him how briefly how to do both jobs and if he accepts the jobs, I'll walk him through them. This isn't 'heavy' stuff mind you, just stuff that doesn't quite show up in a, "how to" book.

What I'm getting at, as so many others have stated so many times before is, you are infinitely better off learning how to do setups yourself. It is not difficult to learn nor do you even have to know how to play guitar for that matter, believe it or not! Also, the only type of supposed, "tech" whom you shall find at these chain stores certainly has a limited level of 'expertise' or (s)he wouldn't be working there purely for, "drawer against commission" in the first place.

Caveat emptor.

I've been under the impression that bass string action needs to be higher than treble string action for quite some time. Dont bass strings need more room to vibrate?

if the bass strings need more room to vibrate, wouldnt it just be the saddles that are set higher, not the entire bridge?

Yes thats right just set the saddles higher. Sorry i misinterpreted or misread your initial post.

If its a 2point trem then loosen your strings off, pull the trem back off the 2 pivot posts and tighten the bass side pivot post. If you meet any resistance stop and try raising the treble side pivot post to match height. Then adjust your saddles to suit.

How to make your electric guitar play great.

also a Dan Erlewine book. more focussed on set up. Kind of an expansion on the parts about set ups, that are in the book mentioned by Cvilleira. I suggest both for anybody.

I would suggest you try find a reputable guitar tech in your area. frankly I wouldn't trust any of my axes to the guys at the chain stores here, and I imagine GC to be the epitome of chain stores. If oyu know working musicians, I would ask around. if you don't know anyone, go to the local open mic/ jams at area watering holes, and ask around. Musicians are pretty helpful on the whole. Some one should at least point you in the right direction.

firt off what kind of trem is it. If is a 2 point the method's covered. If its a 6 point it sounds like the things out of position and riding up onto the scratchplate.
