I am buying my first guitar and I'm eyeing the rosewood.

Until recently I was a big fan of Rosewood and didn't care for the Maple.
I now own a Strat with a Maple fretboard and I love it.

Best advice I can give is to go out and try both before you buy the one you like.

I agree, i actually had a 2001 MIA strat with a maple neck and i hated it.It was slick feeling and i didnt like the way it felt.I bought a rosewoodstrat and i love it .I also bought a SRV with a pao ferro and i love it too.I tried out the maple neck strat on one of the new American Standard and i fell in love with it and bought it.I dont know what it was, if it was the satin finish or maybe the wood , but i am a big fan of the maple neck now.

Does the choice of fretboard material have much affect on tone? I have read that rosewood gives a warmer tone and maple is brighter. I don't have any guitars with maple so I can't confirm.

There's a hoard of discussion on that topic in multiple threads on that question in the archives of this forum. A 'Search" will yield you weeks of reading and loads of interesting and valuable information.

Hello Pols080596,

Fretboard material isn't a deal breaker
for me, or is color. If I like the guitar I
buy it. I own 5 Fenders, 4 rosewood & 1 maple.

I would like to get my hands around a ebony
fretboard stratocaster or telecaster.

Try em both.

Cheers.

It's all personal preference. Personally, rosewood is what gives me a good vibe so that's what I choose.

I prefer the rosewood over maple. Over time it does not show wear as easily as maple. Easier to maintain, just use a little lemmon oil on every 6 months to a year to keep it nourished. That is a personal choice.

I have owned maple fretboard guitars, there's nothing wrong with them. I really do not notice a tone difference; however, some people can. I do know that my next Stratocaster may have a maple neck as long as it sounds good in the shop.
