I have a Fender Highway 1 Strat made in 08. Had it for about 4 months now and its been setup once however I Ive come to realise I think the action may be a little too high. Starting from about the 9th fret I think it seems too high and so I think I may have to adjust the truss rod to compensate for the concave fingerboard. Any thoughts???
Cheers

Welcome to the Forum.

The Fender setup guide is here: http://www.fender.com/support/stratocaster.php

HOWEVER

If you have never done a setup on a Strat before I suggest taking it to a Tech and having it done. If you ask most Techs will let you watch.

A trick a guy once taught me, was to turn the rod a quarter turn in either direction as it flattens out the neck.

Then hold down the first fret and the 13th fret together, there should be a very slight space between the string (between those two fretted notes) and the tops of the frets.

Thats the best I got. Sorry man, I hope someone on this board gives your the real scoop soon.

thanks for the replies so far. just a question regarding the measurements for the height of the strings and neck relief. Do you measure from the string to the metal fret or from the strings to the fretboard

To the top of the metal fret.

Just so you know: The measurements on that page are a general setup. Many of us have our necks adjusted much flatter and our action set lower.
Once you learn how to do setups you will experiment to get your guitar exactly like you want it.

Hi Sgt Kulpepper, welcome to the Forum.

If you are adjusting your trussrod to change your action then you are already going wrong. Relief and action are two different things (though obviously related).

Now if only Fender would put instructions about these much asked questions somewhere on this website...

I am not trying to hijack a thread so I'll ask here instead of a new post.
Aside from string gauge changes what other factors determine a truss rod adjustment? I purchased a cheap strat copy to learn how to set up I think I am comfortable with action and intonation, but I am a little reluctant to adjust the truss rod especially on my good guitars. What will happen if I under/over adjust?

String Tension not just string guage, also the weather. I do a complete setup twice a year as the weather changes from winter to spring and from summer to fall.
ALWAYS de-tune before you make a truss rod adjustment. Go slow with your adjustments, a 1/4 turn at a time, re-tune, let the guitar sit a few hours before turning another 1/4 if needed.
If you over/under adjust you will get string buzz on certain parts of the neck.
Try setting up your guitar using the Fender specs (link in prior post above) exactly to get used to what every adjustment does. Then try to get your neck flatter and your action lower while keeping your bridge floating and getting the intonation set.
