We probably also need an "influences because you had to learn their licks even though you didn't want to" thread... I was looking through a box of old stuff from when I was teaching at a guitar store many years ago, and I had forgotten that I dutifully learned and transcribed just about any piece of music that my students requested. Man... I gave Ugly Kid Joe way more attention than they warranted. Heh. On the plus side, turns out my 23-year-old self's take on Little Wing was not so bad...

Hello Firstrat,

Chet Atkins has always been a favorite of mine.
But I never had nimble fingers, so as it turn out
I'm a flat pickin strummer and still having fun.

Kevin---You should never assume.

Cheers.

Ah, that's a good one! I can't hope to pull off what he does so I'd probably never even try - but that sound is an influence for sure!

Doyle Dykes similarly, far as techinique is concerned. Dazzled by it: no hope of learning most of the licks, but I can give some of the basics a bit of a try...

Cheers - C

Hello Ceri,

Here's a good little vid with
Doyle sounding like Chet .
Playing a big blonde L-5CES,
I never tire of this kind of stuff.

Cheers.

Yea, I was simply trying to inspire thought and people seem to like to respond to these threads. If Kevin doesn't like the thread, he has the right to state that. He also has the right to not read it and not participate, that is what I do with threads I don't care about. I have never told anyone in any forum to search or look at other threads. No hard feelings to Kevin at all...this is America, thank God

Also, another poster mentioned a thread about being influenced by bands you don't like because you had to learn them for one reason or another. That's interesting, but does not apply to me. I was never a teacher and never had to learn anything I didn't want to. But you know what, I did learn things I did not like by watching others. I never liked U2 early on, and I thought the song "I Will Follow" was simple and stupid. It has to be easier to play than Smoke on the Water, but is not a good song like SOTW is. So I learned it the first time I seen it played and over the years, it and U2 in general grew on me.

Playing guitar made me enjoy music that I would have never liked otherwise...it kinda made me a metal head, even though I started by loving classic rock...like ZEP , Deep Purple, the Doors, The Who ect. I still have my staples to listen to, but I am much more open to other genres thanks to learning to play. I truely believe that playing a instrument opens the mind in many ways, and is theraputic when you need some theropy;) as we all do from time to time.

Me neither! Superb - thanks so much for posting that.

Great to have music where I don't have to worry about how it's done - cos I ain't ever going to get anywhere close! Just sit back and enjoy!!

Cheers Mr Bill - C
