Fender and John Mayer announced they were making two versions of Mayer's "Black One", which is a custom masterbuilt John Cruz Custom Shop.

Fender is apparently making 2 versions of this guitar: a limited run of EXACT replicas ( only 83 are going to be made) and an unlimited run of the "Black One" that is less expensive, but not a "dead on" model.

Has anyone else heard about this? I was wondering what kind of price range this might be in, and when it possibly might be up to buy ;)

the following comes from Mike Eldred of the Fender Custom Shop's lips:

hey Mike! HUGE FAN!

what's the current status of "The Black One"? Did you spec it yet? (I could hear it was you in his video your voice is pretty distinctive)

I understand if you can't tell anyone yet (being under wraps and everything)

also, what's your fave Tele? I know you use them mainly.

Thanks!

Chandler,

We have been talking about the Black One for a while. To clear up any confusion, John Mayer built that guitar, john Cruz relic'd it and put it together. It will be a cool project (without giving too much away), and we are still working out the details...and that does NOT mean money, it means Relic or NOS, PL10 version, etc. John wants everybody (you) to be happy, so we're asking for opinions too.

Teles: I have a 68 that I made a neck for when I worked at Charvel when I was like 20. I still use that primarily, it has a Twisted Tele neck pkp, and an SCN in the bridge.

well... I had probably only made a couple more posts than the O.P. before I scrolled down far enough on the forum front page to see that there was a dedicated Custom Shop section, so that may have something to do with it.

Also (to play devil's advocate), if one were to search the forums for the terms "John Mayer" or "the Black One" there would be so many results that it may be easier just to make a new thread. Mayer's fans seem... enthusiastic :)

Hey, chanman! You seem knowledgeable about things John Mayer.
What do you know about those fabled "Big Dipper" pickups? Are they seriously underwound? Do you know their specs?

I make it a point to be in the know JM-wise. he was my main influence to start playing, and hence why I go to Berklee in the summer and am hoping to attend there after high school ;)

they have the tonal characteristics of underwounds, but they are just simply low output pickups. I compared them to my custom underwound Fender 57/62s and they sounded very similar.

the neck is low 6k, middle is mid-6k, and the bridge is low 7k. they use Alnico V magnets.

hey...some of us are much better guitar players than computer technicians, and don't have the time to go through all the back threads or simply don't know how to search for one....thats why I ask questions even if they've been discussed before...sorry :(

A little Lexapro can go along way to moderating that hero worship. Let's hope your studies at Berklee will ultimately find you sounding like you and not like Mayer who sounds too much like SRV for my taste. What's more, taking nothing from Mayers chops, most of what I hear on commercial radio is more voice than guitar. I had to see him live to first appreciate his abilities as a player. I have said elsewhere in this Forum, as we have several threads on him, that he has clearly made his bones as a pop vocalist where he has the ladies' eyes rather than in the limited market of the bluesmen, where his chops shine.

On Orville's question:....in past threads (during the guitar contest, I believe), we have been linked to Mayer's blog. If my memory serves me he worked with Fender on a circuitry which would 'scoop' out the midrange and emphasize the hights and lows which is his preference. We were also treated to a great deal of mad passionate discourse on his amps and signal chain. These can be resourced in their entirety through a Forum Seach.

Word has it the Masterbuilt Limited run of 83 guitars will be around $5-6K (street price more like $4,500.00 ) and and U.S. production guitars at $3,495.00 (street $2,995.00). New stadard JM models as you know are now 25% more at $2,000.00 retail, not $1,500.00 anymore.

A little too much has been made of the Big Dippers IMO and or JM's sound. Pending on amp, amp settings and pedals - you can achieve much the same sound with Texas Specials, even 69's and others - remember his God is SRV = Texas Specials. There are other companies that make a similar verion of the Big Dipper -maybe better IMO - I have them, but not here to promote the company as they did not supply to me for free. I can pick-up any of my plethora of Strats and plug into a Fender Tweed Blues JR. with pedal use of: Katana, Botique OD (FT) and a quality Reverb (T-Rex Replica, Aqua $@!&, Old Boss DM, etc) and be on my way IMO.

IMO JM is very talented, as he can emulate SRV and Hendrix style and sound very good, but anyone who sits in their room for 8-hours a day playing SRV and has a tatoo of initials should!!!

Take a little from your favorites as a tribute or more importantly as a guidleline/footprint to where you want to go with Your Style, just don't go over the top and copy one legend- JM clearly has with SRV and Hendrix IMO. Thanks to JM, it made be go back and re-visit Hendrix's music.
