JF had some great strat tones on the Blood Sugar album. The solo for "I could have lied" jumps out, but great sounds on Sir psyc sexy and others, too. I would like to duplicate this sound on a track I am working on, and am praying a forumite knows some secrets for amp settings/ pup selections. Yahoo search did not yeild any info. Suggestions?

Sir psycho sexy is one of my favorite Pepper's songs. I'd think a wah is crucial and maybe neck pick up with a bit of reverb. The bass in that song is so distracting 'cause it's so great. (But it's been a while since I've heard that track.)

His tone isn't much complex tho. Strat single coils into an EL34 amp. It's his left hand muting that makes all the difference.

I know he used a Marshall Silver Jubilee head (the 100/50) extensively on that album...it was purchased at Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Mi...it used to belong to a friend of mine (who is still kicking his own butt for selling it). That amp can be seen in the Live at Slane Castle dvd.

Anthony Keidis was from my old neck of the woods (western Mi) and may have tipped him off to that place, though I think it's pretty well known on it's own.

Like a few people have said, his sound is extremely simple. Just use the neck pickup of a strat. I've heard he uses seymour duncan antiquities. Amp wise, A Marshall Major 200-watt and a Marshall Jubilee (I'm pretty sure it's actually a 25/50) are his main amps. He also uses Marshall cabs with the stock celestion speakers. On blood sugar, he used an Ibanez WH-10 wah pedal. I'm not completely sure about his amp settings, but most of his awesome tone comes from technique. If you really wan't to emulate his sound, I suggest studying some live performances of his.

+1 to this.

On other threads sometimes his fans get upset when people suggest he doesn't warrant a signature model, but a big part of it is that he uses stock gear. With him(and Hendrix, and SRV, etc,) the gear isn't what's special.

The others all have something quirky, or different about their gear. The only thing to set JF apart is is style, and skill. In other words, you can't sound like him unless you play like him.

Great to know someone shares my views on this. I hear way too many people complaining about these things.

On the topic of a signature guitar, The only Frusciante signature guitar that I could ever see working is a custom shop replica of his '62 strat. And they'd have replicate the crazy wear on it, otherwise it would just be a '62 reissue.

jnastyNE: If you find any specific amp settings of his, could you let us know?

I've seen his amp settings on the web. I'll try to find them.

he doesn't use antiquities, those my friend are '62 strat pickups. that dude doesn't use anything that isn't vintage except straps and picks.

when he lost his first 62 strat, his 65 mustang, and his 66 jaguar in a fire (1995?) he didn't have an electric until flea bought him that 62 burst as an incentive to re-join in 98.

He does have antiquities on his maple neck sunburst. He found it out when a tech opened it. Most likely a mod from a previous owner.

And i do belive the 62 was the first strat when he came back, but he already had the red jaguar.

on the maple neck strat yes, but that's somewhat of a recent purchase or gift if my research serves me correct. i also believe that's a 57 or 59 (maple and two-tone brownburst).

the 62 is rosewood contains the original (i've heard re-wound) pickups. the fiesta jaguar was a gift from either anthony kiedis or vincent gallo. the main jaguar he had before the fire was a sherwood green 64 or 65 with the switches removed. look at the pic of him in the bath tub and he's got the green one. i think he also had a lake placid jag that was either lost or he gave it to josh klinghoffer. the red one never appears until after he cleaned up and has long hair.

just sayin, dude's my idol. i'm a bit o.c.d. about it.

So is mine ;)

The red jaguar must have been bought on late '97 or early '98, I guess. But, as stated on scar tissue, he didn't have a stratocaster, so they bought him the '62.

Even so, it's the '57 with antiquities that was used to record californication, except for otherside (white falcon + red jaguar), californication (white falcon) and road tripping.

On blood sugar sex magik he appears to be using strats with 70s style headstock, right?

yes, which i heard was his old ibanez with a strat neck on it that he got from either a tech or someone they toured with. he said rather than buy something new, he'd just play that until it was dead. i don't think he was so picky then, because he just wanted to be a rock star. but then when he sobered up, he was like, wait, i can be a rock star only if i play the coolest $@!&, and pretend like i don't think it's so cool!

he knows it's cool. he knows he's lucky, and he damn sho' knows he's the baddest of the bad!

there's a video of him playing omar's sig ibanez and he says "if it wasn't new, i'd steal it from you..." and everyone laughs and then he says, "but can i borrow it?"

i do remember seeing his jm200 or whatever bullshit marshall he used to tour on californication for sale for like $20k or something ridiculous.

eh, i quit trying to play like him years ago, but i'll never stop trying to sound like me playing through his stack!

EDIT: well this puts a whole new spin on things.

Thanks for the feedback.
I guess I am so used to hearing tricked out mods, custom heads, and designer pick-ups, that its hard to tell a good stock Stratocaster tone when I hear it.
Sounds pretty dry as far as reverb. Lots of highs and mids, but he gets a nice crunch, too. The page I found that lists his gear is a little shakey on how he sets his gain.
