I know i have posted a few questions about floating/locking trems, but i'm so bloody scared of buying one, after my Ibanez issue. Does anyone know where to buy a Floyd Rose/Floyd Rose style tremolo (other then eBay)? Thanks.

I strongly recommend trying kahler if you have had issues with floydrose. You can fit them with minimal routing too. If your after a floyd you cant go far wrong with warmoth.

I would imagine that just about any music store should carry one or be able to order one...as well any online store as well...try musiciansfriend.com

First thing is first…you gotta’ make sure you buy an original Floyd Rose tremolo….not a tremolo license under Floyds patent…. Say whatever you will about the Floyd Rose Tremolo:
The fact is it is still the best straight ahead Rock n' Roll tremolo on the market. It's the only one that really stays in tune. It's Bulletproof and a real workhorse.
Just because it say's Floyd Rose on it doesn't mean it's the real McCoy.
There are probably 50 companies manufacturing Floyd Rose Style Tremolos, Most of them will obtain a license from Floyd.
The fact that they have purchased a license and are paying Floyd a royalty does not mean that they have to build it as well as Floyd.
Floyd Rose Tremolo's have gotten some bad press over the past 10 years because of cheap Asian impostors. Like I said above, there are many companies who have legally licensed the name but haven't built the unit up to the standard of the original German manufactured unit. The original units are case hardened. They don't wear on the pivot points like the cheaper ones do. This means that they really do stay in tune. The Floyd Rose Tremolo utilizes over 15 patents and it is my understanding that Floyd doesn't necessarily license out all of the patents.
When the main patent ran out finally after a 17 year stint. Floyd decided to lower the price to make it impossible for the competition to eat his lunch.
Never let it be said that Floyd Rose is short on intelligence. Floyd is probably one of the smartest people in the industry today.
Make sure you ask for the Original German Floyd Rose Tremolos
I have a tone pro (licensed under the patent) on my Ibanez RG550 and it is junk!!!!! I have a kahler on my BC rich and it is better that the edge pro but not too much

Ok, I agree with Lic. Floyds. Junk! Would I need to route out the back, if I didn't want to? I've seen lots without the back routing. I've played a few Kahler's and didn't like them, as they didn't stay in tune whenever I bent a string. In the end, wouldn't a Super Vee be as much as a Orig. Floyd?

To say kahler dont stay in tune is absurd. Especialy when you consider the fact that their scope for setup ranges far wider than any floyd system. Then add the lock off option and tension control too. Floyds are basicaly just a 2 point knife edge trem that is susceptible to all the knife edge problems. Namely the minute the post or knife edge wear they loose tuning stability. Thats why a early 80's shredder used to go through one in 2 weeks. Then you have the string to spring balance problem on setup too. Non of those points occur on cammed systems. I'd much rather oil a kahler once every 6 months than keep rotating pivot posts and file smooth knife edges.

True, I like Kahler's and they are smooth and easy to control.

I second this.

I bought my Floyd Rose off eBay brand new for $160. Everything came with it and I had it 3 days after I bought it. I agree, if you don't want to go the Ebay route then Warmoth is the next best way, though any Fender dealer can order a Floyd Rose for you too.

Ok, I've done a bit of research on the Kahler site. It says "only top routing requierd". That means the nut doesn't need routing? It also says they lock the strings behind the nut...

It means you dont need to route the trem at the back to allow for pull ups. You need fretboard/neck routing to accomodate any locking nut.

Hmm. Regardless of whether a Floyd is made by Schaller or not (and Schaller make 'em under license, like everyone else), what bothers me about them on Strats is the string radius at the saddles.

The quoted website doesn't quite care to mention the fact that Schaller's FR, like most (all?) others, has a 12 inch radius at the bridge. Couple that with a ten inch radius at the nut and you have a very ungainly setup over a Fender's 9 1/2 inch radius fingerboard.

Some people like their strings set to a smaller radius than the fingerboard. Who on earth wants the strings laid out to a flatter radius? Not comfortable, and for all Floyd's cited intelligence he didn't put saddles with height adjustment on his original bridge. No idea why not...

Cheers - C

I'll be getting one of these for my Strat once I have the $$$:

http://www.super-vee.com/index.html

Double locking, no routing, looks quite cool. A little expensive, but it's worth it to not have to rout the body.

EDIT: Just saw you mention one of these in an earlier post. Sorry if I'm a little late.

Man, after all this, i might as well save up for a Super Vee. After i buy a laptop, that is. I've heard so many good things about them. Nothing bad, unlike every other lockin' trem out there. Thanks guys, but after all this (long-ish) thinking, that will be the route I go.
