Your favorite guitarists are not always your "influences." (I put it in quotes becuase the term reeks of some kind of rock-star self-importance... it always reminds me of a cartoon in The New Yorker back in the 70s, of two ordinary, suited guys chatting at a cocktail party, and one is saying to the other, "My humor, of course, owes a debt to both Johnny Carson and George Burns, but, in the end, I'm me.")

You don't have to tell anyone your influences, because they can hear them when you play.

How right you are. I suppose we're all influenced to some degree by the guitar players we hear, although I think categorizing those influences is necessary. On one hand we have the guitar player -- for example, Clapton -- who you hear play a really wicked lick. You think "Wow, I'd like to learn that riff," and then you go ahead and learn it and use it in a solo with your band. The chances of someone picking it out are probably minimal: unless it's something really identifiable, you're safe to use it virtually anywhere.

On the other hand there are guitar players who have something almost intangible about their playing that you attempt to incorporate into your own music. In my case Keith Richards and, in particular, his brilliant sense of timing, is something that I really admire. I'm certainly not aiming to be a KR clone or even play Stones music -- although I adore the Stones. What I attempt to do is achieve that "sound ragged, play tight" kind of feel with my own music. In this case, I'd say KR is a much bigger "influence" on my music than any virtuoso guitar player.

I don't know if any of that made sense, but I like to think it does. So, in the spirit of the thread, here is a small list of guitar players who have "influenced" my own music: Keith Richards, Mike Campbell (if I could play one note with the same feeling he does, I would be happy forever), Robbie Robertson, Jack White and G.E. Smith.

Hendrix
Gilmour
Clapton
Frusciante
Kreigger
B.B.
SRV
Mayer

Probably what your most prone to hear in my playing although i have recently picked up slide guitar and Trucks is definetly my inspiration when it comes to sliding in open E.

Those are the influences and the favorites. It's really difficult to choose among so many notable players.

But I had to go with the "stranded on a desert island and can only bring 5 albums" thing.

I just saw Richie Kotzen and Paul Gilbert play w/George Lynch here at the HoB in Anaheim at the beginning of this month

I was there too. Lynch SUcked. Poor guy.

I totally agree! I was really let down by him and what was with his tone? It was HORRIBLE! Richie was awesome though and Paul stole the show :D

I saw the footage on youtube... I don't know what has happened to Lynch- man he was awesome in Dokken.
If you look at any vids of him in a non-band jam or NAMM show display it plays just horribly. Its not even music (well, you knew that already).
I wonder what happened?

It was odd because that night he was playing a Fender Esquire (tele with no neck pickup). He was the only one to have 2 full stacked amps, and his sound was going nowhere. Paul and Richie had 4 speakers or less, and they cut like butter.

When he busted out his Skull & Bones guitar for the last song his tone finally cut thorugh. Not too bad. Poor guy can't play with gloves on either. He wishes he was Jake E.Lee. But yea, Lynch was awesome with Lynch Mob and Dokken, he's a major influence and favorite of mine, but he definitely lacks in the improv dept.

Richie was unbelievable. Paul's music was so interesting and flashy. Very musical. It just makes a guy happy. =)

Richie blew me away (was my first time seeing him) and it made my night watching Paul play "Scarified". I thought Richie had the best tone all night...an American Dlx Tele into a Cornford.

Naw man its his Signature Tele. Japanese Fender RK Telecaster. His amp is gorgeous sounding. That man's voice sure can fill a room.

Also, YES about scarified. I was gonna be disappointed if he played it with only 1 guitar, but his wifey NAILED Bruce's part! It owned! She was killin'!

I have a lot of players that I like, but, you know, NO ONE phrases like Gilmour. Everytime I listen to anything he played I always think, " I need to remember to try to phrase like that. He is a master for sure.

Time to listen to Comfortably Numb!

Oh wow, I wasn't aware he had his own tele. I was back by the soundboard so from where I was it looked like an American Dlx.

She did nail it, I was impressed!

Without any order:

Dave Murray
Adrian Smith
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Steve Lukather
Eric Clapton
Brian May
Alex Lifeson
Zakk Wylde
Jimi Hendrix
Randy Rhoads
Mark Knopfler
James Hetfield
Dave Mustaine
Marty Friedman

The most influential from this group are probably the Iron Maiden duo, SRV and Steve Lukather.
