It's neat how you have Gary Moore on top of your list while saying you're not putting it in any order

Gary Moore is on the top of my list too. He's one of the few guitarists who can play indiscriminately on any guitar, be it a Strat or a Les Paul. He still gets that beefy and huge tone.

Those are the influences and the favorites. It's really difficult to choose among so many notable players.

But I had to go with the "stranded on a desert island and can only bring 5 albums" thing.

Your favorite guitarists are not always your "influences." (I put it in quotes becuase the term reeks of some kind of rock-star self-importance... it always reminds me of a cartoon in The New Yorker back in the 70s, of two ordinary, suited guys chatting at a cocktail party, and one is saying to the other, "My humor, of course, owes a debt to both Johnny Carson and George Burns, but, in the end, I'm me.")

You don't have to tell anyone your influences, because they can hear them when you play.

Players who have actually influecned my playing are Larry Carlton and Walter Becker, George Harrison and Paul McCartney, Martin Barre (Jethro Tull), Carlos Santana and Merle Travis. In addition to players, my playing is heavily affected by some specific solos: Drift Away, Doctor My Eyes, Woodstock (the CSN&Y version), a bunch more. I wish you could hear more of James Taylor when I play acoustic, and more of Jim Campilongo when I play electric, but as much as I would love to claim them as "influences," they really aren't.

I have to agree with SlapChop there... in fact, my favourites probably aren't influences at all, in that I wouldn't be inclined to learn how to play anything by them. I guess I did that a lot when I was young and found that I didn't listen to those particular players much afterward, which seemed a shame. Now I can kid myself that by doing my own thing I will arrive at my own style... heh... sort of like what Adrian Belew does (yeah, right, in my dreams).

Although... I do think there are some players who are inimitable, and you can try to learn as much as possible from them safe in the knowledge that you'll never be able to say "well, I guess I got that down"... Hendrix is foremost among those players for me. It'd take me a lifetime to convincingly imitate something he improvised when he was half my age, and I still wouldn't be able to synthesize that into my own thing.

I don't know... maybe if you spend long enough learning something, it becomes an influence whether or not you want it to. Sorry, rambling a bit but it's late here... I put in years learning Joe Pass and Tuck Andress pieces, and then more years learning Sabicas and as much Rafael Riqueni and Paco de Lucia as my pathetic little fingers could stumble through... now, when I pick up my guitar I play the blues and that's it! Maybe a listener would think there were some jazzy elements to it. I think it's just that time of life for me -- got the blues, man, but in a good way.
