I got a great idea:
go to your local community college and enroll in business economics 101. Jesus, stop your b*tching. You can still buy a fender at the 2008 price at Guitar Center. How many more times are we going to have this same discussion?

More whining.

Get a job. Make money. Buy gear. It's a time-tested formula.

A number of manufacturers have had price increases this year, Gibson among them. I just think in the case of Gibson it wasn't as noticed as their prices have been quite astronomical for a while

Not everyone thinks Gibsons Prices are astronomical! There are reasons Gibson cost what they do and that is they are not bad guitars.

I know they're good guitars, I own one and love it. But still, if I hadn't worked for a music store when I bought it, I never would've been able to afford it. I'm not a doctor or a lawyer, I'm a musician with a day job. It seems they're catering to the formers rather than the latter.

$8504 for a 50th Anniversary '59 Reissue Les Paul is a tad on the ridiculous side though, don't you think?

$3899 for a regular, off the rack Les Paul Std?

I don't know where you shop, but LP Standards are @ 2,500 in Chicago.

Fender may not be able to make its price increases stick. Gibson's high prices are catching up with them. Gibson Guitar Inc. announced that it has laid off 50 on Friday and 70 today.

According to a press release issued by Gibson on March 20: "World Wide sales for musical instrument product categories in which Gibson Guitar compete have dropped more than 20% in the US and most of the world in the first quarter of 2009. While Gibson has continued to gain market share, the extent of the slowdown in retail purchases, and the uncertainty of when this market will recover mandates that Gibson makes changes to insure the size of our organization is appropriate for the anticipated sales levels. This large drop in purchases is being experienced in virtually all consumer product categories."

Soggycrow i couldn't agree more and i wouldn't be surprised if these prices eventually come down anyways.

Might i also add that craigslist or used guitar bargains are not hard to find and in this economy alot of people will be selling so wait for the right opporunity and pounce.

I have personally seen some amazing guitars sold pretty reasonably on craigslist like an american mint strat for 700 or 1976 ibanez artist for 600. Just gotta keep some money stashed in bank and watch places that sell used.

of course i will own a Jagmaster soon regardless of the increase just because i love grunge. :)
