I have a 78-79 also and there's no good info really, except for the anniversary models. Here's some info on 70's

There weren't any "models" back then as there are now. About the only variations you had were finish options and hard tail or trem.

BINGO!!!! No there weren't. You could get color, hard tail, trem, and a couple of neck widths, Maple or Rosewood. No jumbo frets, 5 position switches either. No Humbuckers or noiseless pups unless you did it yourself. If it ain't hummin, it ain't a Fender anyway. On my 72, you have to balance the switch between positions to get the other 2 unless you were handy and did it yourself. We didn't even have fancy cables either. No rollers or locking tuners.
Oh, and we had to walk 5 miles in the snow to get to school.

How did we ever survive

Seriously, just check the serial number, pull the neck and check the pot codes to be sure it's original.

I think the 5 way switch came out in 77 so his guitar should have it.

1978 was the second year of the 5-way switch.

Ouch, I forgot about that. Just remember 70's Strats in general got a bad rap in the QC dept. My 72 is fine and I've had it since it was new. If you like them, that's all that counts. Be sure it has no tuning/intonation problems too. I like the big headstock on mine. It still sounds and plays great. Mine's light, some were like boat anchors.

There are some Gems from those days. Many don't no that several of those 70's years that Leo fender was a consultant for CBS. They were not bad guitars they just had bad quality control and badly made guitars made it onto the street in high numbers.

Boat anchor right here. Almost 2 full lbs heavier than my MIM.

Like I said, mine's great but it's an early 72 (March). Nice tight neck pocket, and great neck and pups. Mines a little under 7 lbs. My Supro is made out of reso-glass whuch is fiberglass and weighs close to 9 lbs. It's not a boat anchor, I think you could surf with it.

Right, Leo came up with the so-called CBS logo and the bullet truss rod and the 3 bolt micro tilt neck attachment system.

So he gets a lot of credit and blame!
