I would not bother with a tremsetter it came stock on my 88 strat plus and it still goes out of tune when a string breaks. if you want to set your bridge to hardtail or dive get the tremol-no. I have it on two of my guitars.I took that crap tremsetter(my opinion) off my plus and put the tremol-no and also installed one on a Peavey falcon I have with a kahler tremolo. it installs quickly and adjusts quickly and UNLIKE the tremsetter you do NOT have to drill in to your guitar. everyone I have talked to that has a tremsetter and broke a string agrees it still goes out of tune, granted if adjusted correctly not as bad but still does and if not stalk it is a realmother****** to install and adjust. Its your guitar though so you have to decide. I am not much for whammining so I use to block my Vibs now I use the Tremol-no on the ones I want blocked. A word though it works on almost ALL tremolos but on two of my old Peavey falcons with peaveys old style of vintage trem the claw is a different width the the tremol-no claw so I would have had to drill. I didn't I just go 5 springs and call it a day. But it does work on kahlers, floyds, fender trems(all of them) and a couple of noname knockoffs I tried it on works like a charm. It can set your bridge to no movement or several points of movement and there are set screws that you can change how your trem works On the fly.Cool HUH? here go check it out
http://www.tremol-no.com

and also you don't have to re-solder your ground as the tremol-no claw has a set screw to attach your ground.sweet.

glad to see another strat plus man on the board! thinking about making a thread devoted to those models... pretty cool. I highly agree. I have one on my '91 and it doesn't do sh**. doesn't look to pretty either.

plenty of strat plus guys around... nice guitars. I'm concurring with the "Tremsetters - What are they good for?" school of thought, as the Hipshot that came on my '91 ultra performs no discernible function. Then again, I've never broken a string on that guitar and I don't really use the whammy bar enough to comment as to its utility. I'd be reluctant to modify a guitar to install one. They are indeed fairly ugly (not that it should really matter), and although I keep the back cover off on my other guitar I've left it on the ultra so it doesn't irritate me by drawing attention to itself in an otherwise beautiful instrument. Heh. Who knows... maybe it's somehow responsible for the "early '90s sound" and will become a sought-after item in years to come...

Thanks for all info. I bought the guitar up in New England at Daddys some years ago. Its a '96. I'm playing C&W and have no use for the tremolo or bomb diving, so my idea is to lock the tremsetter. I will also put on a Rio Grande Stelly P/U in the bridge position to get some twang.
Once again, thanks for the help

[quote="terrybell"]no use for the tremolo or bomb diving, so my idea is to lock the tremsetter.

Consider 'stopping'' the trem as done in the Clapton. With the bridge set flat to the guitar top, a wood block fitted snuggly in the space between the back of the trem rout and the trem block, 5 heavy vintage springs, and the trem claw set properly to balance the tension, you won't need the tremsetter at all. You can then setup the guitar as if it were a hardtail.

If you've never seen the look, find someone who owns the guitar, or perhaps a dealer will pull the back plate off and give you a look.

I'm a Strat Ultra guy; I love this guitar. As for the functionality of the tremsetter I am underwhelmed. I never broke a string. Oh wait...a friend of mine broke the high E string and it did not go out of tune. But I wouldn't play the guitar like that. I always carry a spare set of strings. So even if it does work, the locking tuners make it easy to change strings, and it stays in tune with tremelo use. I'm no 'dive bomber' though.

I have no plans to change to a tremelo block or that tremelo-no thing because the soul of the strat would be lost.

My Firestorm Strat finish and the Hipshot tremsetter can be seen here:

Clapton's rationale about the 'stopped' trem block was that, even though he does not use the tremolo, he felt that the presence of the system, including the springs, lent something to the tone of the guitar that was missing in the tradtional hardtail design. Thus, as you suggest, preserving the "soul' of the Strat.

Thats part of why I like the tremol-no because its still the claw and springs and all that you just get to decide if you want to lock or wiggle and you can do it on the fly as well. its cool for me. I use to do the block thing back when and I liked that. I have a maple block in one of my 80s Peavey Falcons and it sounds great. block it about 2 days after I bought it over 20 years ago and its still there.

You simply retain the flexibility he claims no interest in.

There's only one photo I've ever seen with the old Blackie sporting a trem bar. It's of him and Townsend on stage at the Rainbow Concert in 1973 (Christies Auction Catalog pg 185) That event is proportedly when the guitar first appeared on stage with him.
