Hello,

I just bought a blue flower stratocaster in near mint condition, the complete guitar is original. Does anybody know how many of these guitars are made over the years? Does anybody know a little more about the history of this guitar? How can I find out more about the guitar with the serial number? The serial number starts with an F so it should be 1986-1987, but I would like to know more about this guitar.

Chris.

The blue flower and pink paisley Teles and Strats were remakes of designs originally produced by Fender in 1968. The design is actually contact paper under the clear coat. I think it was made by DuPont. The Telecaster and Tele bass were the only models that came with the "wallpaper" finish. The original retail costs were Telecaster- $279.50, Tele bass- $289.50.
The E series (1984-87) MIJ Stratocasters were modeled after a 1972 Strat, with 3 bolt neck plate, bullet truss rod, and large headstock. I am not sure what model reissue the Tele was.
The latest round of reissues are modeled after a later year Strat, with a 4 bolt neck plate, and smaller headstock.
It sems as tho the 1980s MIJ Blue Flower and Pink Paisley Strats and Teles are becoming collectable, as they should due to their rare finish, and excellent build quality. My E series Pink Paisley Strat is a prized possesion, and will never be sold. It is quite a nice guitar, as I'm sure your Blue Flower Strat is.

The Blue flower has the following ser. number: F013472, so it's date should be 1986-1987. It has 3 bolts and a large headstock. I am very happy that I got a hold on this guitar, I had seen one before only once in a store and a friend of mine bought it, he later demolished the guitar, I reckon he had some frustrations... Still, I would like to know more about this guitar.

If you go search for Fender Japan, you can find info on the 1972 Reissue guitar that your is similar to. Also, CA Feathers knows quite a bit about "72 RI Strats, so maybe he is reading?
I guess Fender saw how much of a cult following these strange guitar has, it decided to reissue the reissue of the reissue!!!(1968, 1980s, 2000s).
When I bought mine new in 1989, I got it because I thought the outlandish look would be good for the band I was playing in at the time. I thought it would be nice to stand out in the sea of black Strats and cherry sunburst Les Pauls. Well, it sure does stand out!!
My only regret is that, back in 1989, Japanese guitars were considered the low price alternative to USA Strats. There was no concern about keeping it stock, as there was no idea it could become collectable. I swapped out the original electronics for a set of EMG SA active pickups. I then sold the pickups, wiring, pots and all for $50. I wish I still had them, so I could return the guitar to original condition. The guitar is a 9.9/10 due to the fact that I have babied it over the years. It only saw a handful of gigs, and has seen extensive studio use.
The 1980s MIJ Strats represent a line of guitars that rival any USA Strats of the same time period, and the fact that mine is 22 years old, and still in excellent condition shows the quality of manufacture.

I have 3 72 MIJ Reissue Strats, including the Blue Flower, here is all I have found out about them, the Blue Flower and Pink Paisley 72 Reissue Strats and Tele's were made for a couple of years, as for how rare they are, I can't say, I have never seen any production numbers. I will say it seems the Blue Flower Strats and Tele's seem to be less common than the Pink Paisley ones, but that could also be because of people hanging onto them.

The previous poster talking about the original tele's are correct, they were made in 68 and these were tributes to those. But this was the first time that any Stratocasters were made in these 2 styles, making them very unique indeed.

Since then, as a previous poster pointed out, they have come out one more time, but they were not 72 reissues, and have a smaller headstock and do not have the vintage colored knobs and plates. It may be a few days, but I will post a couple of pics of mine here.

For the record, I also have an off white (not sure if it's olympic or more of a light butterscotch) MIJ 72 Reissue with staggered pickups (not common) and a maple neck. And a very rare MIJ 72 Reissue in Black with a rosewood fretboard.

Not an expert, but I definately have a love for the late 80's early 90's MIJ 72 Reissues!

The blue flower has a maple neck, not rosewood, only the black one has a rosewood. And wow, I said I would post those pics 2 years ago, sorry about that.
