John used multiple guitars and amps on the record. Everything from low output pickups to his big dippers. Most fender pickups will get you most of the way there but his fingers and amps have a lot to do with what you hear on that record. That said, you can pick out one particular sound and if you give me a you tube link I will tell you our collective best at what will get you the closest.

I understand about the amp and the fingers getting his true sound.

Right now i own a marshall vintage modern.i will be purchasing a fender amp soon..

The clip below is basically the sound im after it runs from around 1:30 to 2:20 (lead part)

Some people are telling me to stick with stock pups.
others are telling me if i want the most out of my strat
i need to change them.

Thanks alot for taking the time to help.I really appreciate it.

Nathan

He said in an interview that almost every song on the record was done with 'The Black One'.

I have an AMStd with the stock pickups and even though they sound different than JMs I was able to nail the same tone by adjusting EQ (it is through the garageband software on the mac) treble 9, bass 8, low mids 2, high mids 3 (approximate values since the software is a lot more precise than any manual EQ). Clean channel only with a bit of reverb and a pinch of delay sometimes (sounds like recipe). Other things that might play into this are pickups are level with the pickguard on the 6 string and a smidge closes on the 1st string and I use d'addario 11's. Guitar controls all on 10. Pickup selector on neck+mid. Another thing my guitar sounds very dark naturally (played acoustically).
Lots of patience and monkeying around with settings required.

Hope this helps somewhat

You might want to try a RW/RP middle pickup and use the selector switch in the 2 and 4 positions.

A Dumble amp would help too. 8)
