The problem is that the ashtrays are too wide for the narrow saddle spacing of the MIM trems.

A guy should be able to attach something to the inside of the sides of an ashtray to make it fit, but I've never heard anyone report on a successful attempt. Something like thin sheets of rubber might actually make the ashtry stay on better!

Unless the cover is for 'show' purposes when the guitar isn't being played, the rubber would absorb a good deal of the strings' resonance. It would be like putting a mute on the bridge.

Here is photographic evidence that you can get an ashtray cover for your MIM Strat.ImageThis is my 2003 Classic Series 50's Stratocaster with one in place. I got the ashtray at a music store in a parts drawer full of old stuff. You may not be able to get a new Fender part, but as you can see, someone, somewhere made it at one time.

there in lies your problem. it will fit all the classic series, but won't fit standard, deluxe, etc. strats. now, if they have an American bridge like on the classic series, etc. then it will

I had one on my 72. It interfered with my muting technique and would fall off from time to time. Why do you think they call them ashtray's? That's about all they're good for.

To be honest, I never actually PLAY the guitar with the ashtray cover in place. But it sure looks retro cool in the photo!!!
So what is the difference between say a 2003 Fender Standard Stratocaster and a 2003 Classic series 50s Strat?? Did they use MIA specs for the 50's Strat even tho it is MIM?

yes. They use all the hardware from the american vintage series hardware. that is why. it would make sence that they use vintage style hardware, to avoid all the whining and complaining.

3M makes an adhesive thick tape that can be cut to make an ashtray bridge cover fit a MIM Standard.
