Hey, I just got a Fender Stratocaster yesterday to start learning how to play guitar. The only chords I know at the moment are E, A, and D. Is there anything I can try and play using just those 3 chords? How long did it take you guys to learn how to play decent because I've only had mine a day and I think I suck.

Learn chords and then scales and the practice practice practice and more practice :)

good advice, but the best way to get better is to play with other people, in addition to practicing.

An old bandmate always used to say "if you are playing by yourself, you are playing with yourself!"

This is a profound statement!

If you move the E up and bar the first fret, you have an F. Get this one down and move it around the neck. Once you master the power chord, you can play any Nirvana song.

Those three chords will allow you to play lots of songs!! Now, go form a band! JK.

As others have already stated, practice moving between those three chords every day AND spice it up by learning a couple new chords every week and you'll be amazed at your progress. But I will tell you that at first you'll think "Why did I think I could be good at this again?".

Keep at it and before long you'll discover barre chords. They open up a whole new world (and, unfortunately, you'll again wonder why you ever decided to pick up the blasted guitar in the first place).
