Again Kudos!!
Out of curiosity, what was you drying/curing time? i am doing a guitar using some acrylic stuff and would appreciate any info.

Edit: haha!! I R SMRT!!!! Just reread, you said it in the first line, 1 week.

Hey TB, thanks for the kind words. Yes, after the final clear coat I gave her a week before the final polish. The acrylic lacquer seems to dry a little quicker than the nitro but it is still lacquer and it does still take a while. It's also worth mentioning that I went fairly light on the clear on this as well...I only did 4 coats because I was using an aerosol (compared with 8 coats of clear on my last refinish which was -way- too much).

Also, depending on how heavy you go with the lacquer (solid or clear coats) you'll want to give things at least a month to harden. My last refinish I had also gotten impatient and the overly thick clear coats actually mushed out from under the pickgaurd and neck plate...call it a learning experience. I learn a little with each refinish I do and each one get a little better.

Make sure you post some shots of yours when it's done...I can't wait to see it and compare notes!

L8r,
Jim

Man, that looks phenomenal...gotta love a nice sunburst finish...my next strat or tele will be a sunburst one. My J-bass is a 3 tone and everyone always comments on how nice it looks, and thats just a factory finish...as said by someone else, the maple neck really makes it pop...

Hey Ya'll,
For those who were following my "Body ID" thread, here's the latest update. After letting the lacquer set for a week, I sat down today to do the final polishing on the body. After 4 hours of wet sanding and rubbing and buffing, my fingers feel like they're going to fall off but I think it was worth it. Just as a refresher, again here's how she looked the day I brought her home...

And here's how she looks now...

Little bit of a difference huh? :D I did make a few screw ups on the back...had a couple of sanded throughs between clear coats...

If this had of been a nicer body, I would have gone back and fixed these but this project has been more about "character" and since this is on the back, I'm not really going to worry about it. I think that once I get the hardware on, it's going to look more like natural wear anyways. I wasn't really trying to do a relic or a Road Worn...just worked out that way.

I've also replaced the logo on the headstock with a vintage correct Fender logo. Now before the flamefest starts here, please know that I do not intend to sell this neck or guitar! I wouldn't be advertising it if I were. I did this strictly for my own personal satisfaction. The way I see this is while a lot of folks buy a particular guitar because of the way it sounds and feels (myself included), looks are important. With this project I wanted to create the look of a more vintage instrument and to me, the headstock logo is part of that. Now honestly here, from a distance it's passable, but if someone were to look closely at it, it's pretty easy to tell that it's a fake. Again I do not intend to sell this neck or anything and I'm not trying to rip anyone off with this. More over, I've left the serial number and the "Made in Indonesia" on the back of the headstock in tact...all someone has to do is check the serial number to see this neck is from a 2004 Squire Standard. The only reason I mentioned it is that when I post the final assembly pics in a few weeks, I don't want anyone to freak if they saw the other shots I posted. So please...no one get bent out of shape on this...I just did this for my own shits and giggles.

I also have the new bridge on order...vintage style Mexican bridge (with the big trem block) and I also ordered a vintage RI "F" neck plate to go with the aesthetics and I'm going to have my birthday engraved on the neck plate as a serial number. I was toying with even putting some Kluson tuners on it but honestly, I like the tuners I have here so they're going back on. I think I've decided to go with my old Lotus pickups on this sucker too...they have a bit more of a vintage tone than anything else I have around here and I can always upgrade the pups later. The other parts should be here in a couple of weeks and this will give the lacquer a chance to harden. Once the rest of the parts come in I'll get her put together and see how she sounds and then I'll get more pics up!

Alrighty, just wanted to post an update now that the final polish is done! I"ll probably start the next project in the next couple of days...going to do a 12 string Strat!

Enjoy,
Jim

Hey Lomitus, I really like whay you've done there. Couple of questions...
Was it a squier body?
I like the CBS decal, I'm assuming that as it was a squier neck, the original decal had no top coat over it and was easy to buff off? (the decal on my old Japanese squire wore away in time!)

Did you top coat over the new decal? (and I'm on your side - it's part of the aesthetic) - so long as you don't rip anyone off on Ebay!!

Cheers

No it wasn't a Squire body...at least as far as I can tell. Best guess is that it's a mid-80's import like an Ibanez or a Cort or something. The neck is indeed from a Squire...a 2004 Indo but the body remains "unknown" other than that it's alder...which is good enough for me at this point.

As to the decal, on this neck the original wasn't actually a decal...I think it was painted on the neck and yes, it buffed out -very- easily. I just used some 400 grit sand paper and took it right off. The new decal was actually a bit of an experiment...I had been looking at the water slide decals and such on Ebay and for the price, I decided to try doing it myself. I actually printed the decal on Avery clear "sticker paper" for inkjets (after sizing the logo) then applied it to the headstock and shot a couple of quick coats of clear lacquer over the top. It's ok and as I said before it's passable from a distance but a water slide would have worked much better...even if I had of printed myself. The Avery stuff has a slight whitish tint to it that tends to stand out against the wood.

I'm not going to bother posting the "before" shot here...it doesn't want to load at the moment and I'm sure ya'll know what a Squire Standard logo looks like anyways. However here's the after...

Image

And again just so no one pops a microchip, I left the back of the headstock with the serial number and such in tact...

BTW...after shooting the clear lacquer over the logo, I did buff it out a bit...used some 400 then 600 grit sand paper and some rubbing compount to make it look smooth again.

Jim

Good work Fella.

I have a friend who is going to sell me a 2003ish sunburst squier std with the same neck, and I was think about doing the whole axesrus wilkinson loaded pickguard upgrade and dropping in a nice bridge (I don't know the spacings yet though...)

Cheers

Hey lomitus: nice polishing work, man!

When you were first showed the body with its previous paint I had my private doubts about putting a sunburst on a stripped body. When we saw the naked timber with that join and the knot my doubts continued.

But you've made it look very nice indeed! Kudos to you, Jim: you pulled it out the fire.

BTW: after all our discussion of the timber on the other thread, now we see it with the finish on it looks much more like alder to me, too!!

Good work, that man - C
