Was thinking about this the other day. What took so long for a David Gilmour Strat? Where's the Hendrix Strat? Took forever for Richie Blackmore Strat too.

It also depends on whether or not the artist wants to endorse any company altogether. :?

John Frusciante should probably have one, except for the fact that there's nothing really special about the Strats he plays. They're all pretty much stock.

As far as I know at least.

His main guitar is a '62 strat in 3-tone sunburst. The only modification is a set of seymour duncan antiquities. I'd love to see a frusciante strat, but i highly doubt it would ever happen. The closest thing you can get nowadays is an American Vintage '62 reissue.

I thought they were the SSL-1's set. I read where John thought they were stock and his tech had opened up the guitar and it was labeled on the back of the pickups.

Gilmour: He goes over it in Phil Taylor's "The Black Strat" book: "David had refused previous requests from Fender to copy his guitar, however he was now assured that a definitive, high quality replica of his Black Strat could be achieved at a cost that was affordable to both fans and guitar players."

Ummm...since when is $4k and $5k THAT affordable? But anyway...

Hendrix: There have been several; one from 1980; Olympic White w/a maple neck and reversed headstock, The Monterey Strat, The Tribute Strat and The Voodoo Strat.

Blackmore: I've had both the MIJ and CS versions of his strat. I've played the new MIM version of his strat and aside from the scalloping (which imo is better on the MIM one) everything else is identical.

As for Adrian Belew, I wasn't aware he was a Parker endorser...last time I saw him with KC, he played a strat exclusively all night.

How about Nils Lofrgen Strat? He is one of the unsung guitar players! Maybe even a Ry Cooder Model, another of the unsung player!

Jimi, David, Eric, Stevie etc. didn't have the benefit/luxury of having a specially designed guitar (strat or any other) when they started making sounds and music that inspired or awed us all. They just took what was out there and made their sounds with it.

I don't see why their aspiring successors need to have a copy of what ended up working for them. Do we need replicas of their instruments/amplifier settings to meke acceptable music today? I guess maybe we do if all we want to do is cover their material.

I say, appreciate what they did, and move on. Get a guitar and make your own sound with it. Become the next guitar hero without concentrating on copying the sound of someone who came before. If you like their sound, then go for it, but don't make it the ultimate goal.

I don't mean to be negative about these signature series guitars but the only reason I can see to have them is to be able to replicate or cover their material in a more or less acurate way. Why? (especially at the premium price).
