I was playing my American deluxe Strat but was interupted by a phone call. As I was on the phone I noticed a hum that I hadn't before. I tried to figure out the source and upon further investigation I grabbed the whammy bar and the buzz stopped. I continued to play with the whammy and realized it was likely the source. Their was no noise when the whammy bar was in my hand and not pressed but when I let go it began to hum.

Is this problem something to be concerned about?
Anyone else experience this? If so what can be done? what is it?

Sounds to me like a grounding issue.

Hi aldric_m. Or try touching the strings and then taking your hands away. Same thing.

If you look beneath the back plate on the back of the guitar you will see a wire soldered to the spring claw. That is earthing the entire harness through your body to ground - via the trem and strings. Touch any of those metal parts and the hum goes away. Hands off and it comes back.

Cool, huh?

Now. Don't get struck by lightning...

Cheers - C
