I think it's not so easy to say "clean" to describe what you want. E.g.: Do you want bell-like clean like Merle Travis Gibson 400 on Capitol records? Or Buck Owens clean Tele? Or maybe Wes Montgomery? To really be of help, you have first of all to describe the type of sound you wanna get.
By the way, Merle Travis recorded most of the Capitol guitar recordings going direct into the mixing board (according to Tom Bresh).
If you dig Merle's sound but want to go through an amp get yourself a Standel or better one of Owen Duffy's "Invicta" amps (better than Standel at half the price!).
If you want clean Tele-twang Fenders would be fine (Twin, Vibroking etc.).

Solid-state amps may be "clean" but sure sound a lot different than clean tube amps!

I think BigJay is on the right track with the Bandmaster. I have owned two. The closed-backed cabinets project a lot of clean sound.

I don't see how you can have this discussion w/o adding a Super Reverb to the mix. If you really want to "throw down": How about going with a Twin or Super with the stock JBL's. What is going to beat them for clean?
