For present-day guitars, I'd go with the mexican, no doubt about it. To me the MIJ don't really feel as good as the MIM.

I own a 99 Mexican Strat and a 06 U.S. standard and if I had to choose between those two I would choose my Mexican. I've never played a Japanese Strat though, but in the end it all comes down to preference.

The best way to select a stratocaster is to play it. It's hard to find MIJ Fenders other than ebay. Tough to go to a store and play one. I haven't heard to many people complain about any MIJ Fender. They have always compared them to the US models.

Take a look at what www.pickguards.com has. They are part of WD Music.

I just usually keep whatever pickguard comes with the guitar. I will buy a guitar on how it feel, sounds and looks. Only one time I actually changed a pickguard, for a Squier Tele, from white to black. Owned the guitar for three weeks and up graded to a 52 reissue.

I like most CIJ better than MIM guitars, but as always there are exceptions.

I own both MIM & MIJ Strats. The '70's reissue Mex to me plays slightly better than my Japanese "Paisley" Strat. It can go the other way around also. Doesnt it all depend on which particular instrument "feels" best to an individual player? One MIM Strat plays/feels better than the one hanging next to it in the store.Mexican builder A may have assembled a better Strat than Mexican builder B did that day.The best advice is to play ALL of the guitars in your local shop, and get the one that plays & feels best to you. You'll have a lot of fun too! 8)

I had a MIM strat and tele, both were great and I can't say they weren't better than any American Guitar I have owned. My US guitars have alway been high end models like my 52 re-issue, Clapton Strat, American Deluxe Strat. I always try to up grade my less expensive guitars. My Lite Ash Tel got SCN's and an S-1 switch. My Squier master series Thinline, DiMarzio bluesbuckers, MIM tele, highway 1's...Other than the neck radius and frets, I always felt there isn't that much difference in the neck and body of any Fender guitar. As I have said, I always play a guitar at a store and if I like it, will try to get it on ebay or shop it at other stores to get the best deal.

I have a MIJ strat from the 80s, and it seems to be nicer not only than the MIM strats coming out these days, but some of the US ones too. :)

The 80s MIJ strats were made by Ibanez I believe ... mine is time-ravaged and the victim of 10 years in a musty basement. I took it in for a setup and it's good as new. And it sounds awesome.

I have to agree with CAFeathers. I have an '86 MIJ Strat that plays better than many of the Strats I played since regardless of origin. These are better than the current crop of MIJs that I think were never meant to be exported. Their reps are rising on the vintage market, too.

For what it's worth, I have an MIM Deluxe Powerhouse Strat that I absolutely love . . . until the 9v dies.

I guess I should add that my choice of the mid 80's MIJ's is based on the fact that since 2000 I have owned:

2001 MIM Strat
2005 CIJ '68RI Strat
2006 MIA Highway 1
1986 MIJ '72RI Strat

The 1986 MIJ '72 RI is my favorite and the MIA Highway 1 is second. The other 2 are long gone.
