Well I finally got it home It is in remarkable shape very light scratches and one light scuff that almost pokished out on the back of the neck.

I found some things needed to be corrected. Can anyone tell me if I did this correctly? I think I did. I was an auto mechanic for 14 yrs and an equipment mechanic before that.

First thing I found was there were dead spots at 12 fret and above on 2nd and 3rd string. I could see the saddles were too low.
I removed all the strings and cleaned with my new fender instrument care kit then put a straight edge ( a real mechanics straight edge) and found the neck was cupping. I adjusted the rod and that was corrected.

Put on a set of Ernie Ball slinkies and proceeded to tune, did not touch the saddles at this point. neck cupped slightly so I gave one final tweek with the string tension backed off and rechecked. cupping problem gone some dead spots remained.

backed off the string tension again and leveled (they were crooked as heck) the saddles. raised the ones for the 2nd and 3rd string. tuned again and much better. Did some more tweeking and retuning. Then I laid the guitar accross my lap and checked the neck with a straight edge again no rocking and can not fit the paper string wrapper under the straight edge at any point. I would call that straight. It appears the strings are slightly higher at the bottom of the neck (not perfectly parallel) I can live with it the way it is for now but what would be the method to correct this? I think some paper reinforcements as shims would do the trick or should I leave that for a pro?

I also want to thank you all for your kind encouraging words. You meet the nicest people playing a Fender!!!!!

When I picked up the guitar he told me he had it set up by a pro. I find that hard to believe I think he monkeyed around with it. can't blame him for trying if he did but I couldn't live with the dead spots.

Yes a case is definitely in order

I really did get lucky. Its pretty cherry for 11 years old. I think the discoloration on the neck turned off a lot of possible bidders. Good for me 8)
