I just registered today and am picking up my first strat tomorrow. I have narrowed my choices down to a Deluxe Player's Strat and a Highway 1 HSS. I am just stuck because I like them both but I haven't played but just a few years and all of that has been acoustic. I can get either one of these for $550 so I'm leaning toward the Highway One simply because it is American made. Could you wonderful people help me make my decision giving why I should choose one over the other since I am essentially an idiot about electric guitars. Thanks in advance!

i'd personally go with the highway one. i love the vintage styling and nitrocellulose laquer finish (also look on the highway one page there's a mini site that has nice pics, info, and a very nice video of it. check it out!)

try both though because it's all about personal taste.

Note: the deluxe players is made in mexico and the body and ?neck? are also but has american pickups and ?hardware?. the highway one is made in the us and has an american body and neck but it has mexican pickups and maybe some hardware. but in the end you can upgrade the highway one with new tuners, pickups and a few other things to make it completey american.

so once again i PERSONALLY would go with the h1 but IT'S ALL ABOUT PERSONAL OPINION! so try out both and happy buying!!! :)

hey and show pics of your strat when you get it!

I played both and I liked both. It's really crucial to play them. The Deluxe Players has vintage noiseless pickups so there's never a hum. The Highway One HSS has the humbucker which is noiseless and then neck/mid will have hum canceling as well because the middle pickup is reverse magnetic something. I went with the Highway One for a couple of reasons.

1. It was beautiful to me (and my wife very important because she had to okay the deal).

2. The neck on the Highway One felt smoother to me. I play a lot of bar chords and generally I'm up and down the fret board when I play and a smooth neck is really crucial. The Deluxe Players neck felt like it was more rough along the fret board. Also, the Deluxe Players neck is oversized and more fat. That's good when bending so you don't go off, and so I was interested in it, but I found it was just a little bulky to work with.

3. The Vintage Noiseless (same as the Clapton) pickups play a little less "live" than the Highway One pickups, which are MIM. That can make you sound better because I think the accidental little hums don't happen much, and it probably just takes getting used to. The Highway One pickups sounded good. I plugged the Highway One into the big amps at Guitar Center and heard no hum from any setting (there was some background noise). I heard a lot of great tone when I was playing some blues riffs. At home on my dinky cheap amp, the amp still gives out a big grrrrrr noise whenever it's in overdrive, which isn't often because I play clean, but it's not the guitar. The amp just makes that noise even if there's no guitar plugged in, it's so cheap. The hum from the guitar, and with cancelling from the mid pickup engaged in the Highway One works really well to cancel all hum (not much anyway) when my cheapo amp is clean. I'm going to look at a better amp over the weekend at sales. If the Blues Jr. has a headphone jack I might be able to swing that.

4. Both are good guitars. Play them as much as you can and see which one fits you best.

I was in the same situation a while a go. I liked the Highway 1, but I went with the Deluxe Players, mostly because I play live quite a bit and having noiseless pickups is soooo nice! I prefer regular single coils for tone, but these noiseless ones do sound great and it's a blessing to have them at live gigs. Otherwise the noise and hum level is a PITA.

The Deluxe Players has a bit chunkier neck with the 12" radius, but it is really comfortable and the tone from this guitar is really good, considering the price point.

I have lots of video clips on my site www.dolphinstreet.com if you want get an idea of what the guitar sounds like.

Cheers,
Robert

Thanks guys! I'm on my way to the guitar store right now and plan to play both of the aforementioned models but am also going to play some of the MIM standards. I'll probably be at the store most of the afternoon (Boo-hoo). I really liked both models and hope that I can decide which one is the best guitar for me. I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks again!

IMHO The deluxe is more a traditional strat, while the highway 1 will be hot and give you the choice of a humbucker...I have an American Deluxe and it's great..

definitely play both... the noiseless pickups will give you a different sound than the highway 1's pups.... both are good guitars, i personally like the looks of the deluxe players better, but i do have one, so i am a bit biased...the deluxe players is a great, versatile guitar though

man i tried a highway one and an american standard over the weekend and i was amazed... by the highway 1! i liked it a lot better than the american standard. it's the first time i've ever liked the cheaper option over the more expenisve. the nitro finish made the guitar feel so light and the tone was unbelievable (even the acoustic was nice. also no fingerprints) i've heard people talking about tryin a guitar to make sure it's your guitar and the highway 1 is mine. when i played it i had this awesome feeling. they're right about the guitar picking the player and the highwya one picked me. i'm not sure if i'm gonna be able to wait until february to get it. i want it now! if you're thinking about getting a strat, try it out.

Did you get a chance to play an American Deluxe?
