I bought an '86 MIJ Contemporary Stratocaster about 3 weeks ago at GC. Anyway, the thing played pretty well in the store, but the strings were shot so the first thing I did when I got home was change them out for basic D'Addario 9s. I have no idea what was in there before, but after changing strings and making all of the setup changes I get this odd buzz when I play anything approximating "b." It turns out that the springs in the rear are going nuts whenever I play a "b" - in the higher octaves, anyway. This is a fairly simple spring-mass-spring sort of system that I will have to fix with different strings, springs or adding mass to the trem. The guitar, however, has the System I tremolo which is pretty massive as it is.

Anyone else ever run into this issue before? If so, how did you fix it?

Check the screws are tight but not overtight. If it is the springs you may want to try dmping them down with some surgical tubing or stuff cottonwool inside em.

Thanks, damping the springs seems to do the trick. I put some heat shrink tubing around them - not a perfect solution, but it will do for now.
