Part of the reason why I liked the neck so much was because it was worn out... And I don't trust myself with a sander.

I like a clean new guitar. I do know though that a guitar will get marks, dents, bumps and scratches.

But i like them to be done by me, so that each mark possibly tells a story, a great gig, a trip away, a fun night in with friends etc.

So roadworn and reliced are lovely, as long as its naturally done by you. i find someone getting this done artificially very cold and would distance me from the guitar.

Just like a torn, worn bald and sewn up time and time again teddy bear, you just know that teddy got so much more love from a kid than the perfectly clean teddy that lay on the top shelf. Same idea with a guitar.

(Its still nice if you can keep your guitar in as good a condition as possible though!)

You don't need a sander. just some #0000 steel wool. The feel of the neck is a simple burnishing job. The maple fretboards look absolutely hideous to me. I don't think they resemble natural wear at all. The Rosewood being dark seems more subtle.

I won't tell anyone not to spend their money on em, but to me the aging process doesn't seem very authentic. When I checked em out, there was a CP 60's (I think it was the CP, it was the mexican re-issue,) right beside em. it was a fair bit cheaper, and to me the only difference in feel was the burnishing on the RW necks. You could do that on the CP easily, in a half hour or so, and with the steel wool there's next to no chance of ruining the neck. or you could play it heavily for a couple months and break it in. my opinion was the CP looked and sounded better. And to me the CP 50 is also a much better guitar.

But to each his own.

I think the road worn series is wack (No offense to Fender, I love you guys)

Just buy a new one and f*ck it up yourself

I tried them out my last visit to the local Fender dealer. I must admit, they do feel nice - that already broken-in, old pair of jeans feel. But no way will I spend that much money for a pre-reliced MIM.

For a little less than that money, my local mom and pop shop has a slightly used cherryburst deluxe hanging on the wall....

Why not just buy a new one and play it a lot? :P I played one today at guitar center, and wasn't really impressed. The wear does not feel natural nor does it look natural. Just my thoughts.

Unless you buy a new Fender with a nitro finish they will never wear like you would like. The finishes are very thick and hard. They will look good for a very long time.

It's like buying jeans with holes already in them. I like messing up my own stuff.

I don't know. I love thinking that my kid (which I don't have yet since I'm 23) one day will open up my guitar case and find a 2008 american standard, aged 50 years or so and be able to appreciate it! What will the RW series look like then? I know that's a dumb way to think about it, but as my first strat that my wife lets me get..

Let me see if I can put this into propestive; I was a mechanic by trade for alot of years, I recently reunited with some fellow mechanics at the same dealership, this afternoon, we got to comparing scars that we had, " oh yeah, I remember when I got that one," and " you guys remember when this happened?" thats what the road worn series feels like to me, every scar tells a story, the trouble is, the scars aren't yours.
