CV, the made in japan was stamped on back of headstock. Not even a waterslide! :? An office stamp

For some reason that looks like waterslide on the pics.I thought they where all kind of dull looking under the finish.

You are probably right. It looks nothing like mine. I'll have to get it back from my daughter and post some pics of the whole guitar front/back!

Thanks for the info. I'm beginning to think that this maybe a japanese lawsuit copy, attached with a fender decal... i'll try to post pictures of the neck and body cavity this weekend.

It's a reissue of one of the transition years in the mid sixties. Either '66 or '67.

Surely the entry hole for the trussrod is wrong for that?

That type of entry hole - with no plastic or walnut drilled plug - together with the absence of skunk stripe are currently to be found on the Affinity Strat. That combination of features have been seen from time to time on Squiers since the '80s. The tuners are Squier '80s/'90s.

The "made in Japan" decal or stamp (not certain which from the photo) is problematic. Without that it would be easy to ID this as a Squier with a fake Fender decal. I've had a bit of a search for that "made in" mark: not found it yet on real or fake Strats...

Cheers - C

The 'no skunk stripe' is period correct and I believe that the headstock access to the truss rod is a simple matter of the Japanese models just not being spot on- could be seen as an upgrade and given that they didn't accentuate is with a walnut liner means that they were trying to downplay it's placement up there.

The serial number is like a transparent sticker or laminate, still i'm not that sure, the appearance of the guitar looks old, the neck looks aged and the body has many paint chips and scratches. The pickup cavity at the bridge is big, looks like it can fit a humbucker and the body thickness is a little bit thinner than a standard strat body. Thanks for the info.

This is how the headstock looks on my 85 minus all that junk on the nut. Notice how Fender decal is and the Made in Japan underneath it on the front,
http://www.strat-central.com/pics/strat ... eadstk.jpg

Enlarge the pic with the magnifying tool and you can clearly see Made in Japan!

I just found this page: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.blackman4/index.htm and it describes my MIJ '68 and '72 RI's exactly.

Thanks that site was really informative. (although its not clear where my guitar falls under.) maybe its a standard strat but the previous owner replaced it with neck with a 70's headstock and placed a fender decal. thats why he made a sticker at the back for the serial. Thanks for the info i'll post pictures of the neck and cavity maybe tomorrow. thanks a lot!

That will clear it up. Someone who gets those details wrong on the neck ain't going to get the neck pocket right. If it's a legit MIJ body we'll be able to tell from the pocket.

Please show us the heel end of the neck, too...

Cheers - C

This fact is what really clears it up.

Think Squier Affinity or Bullet that's been modded to appear to be a MIJ Fender Stratocaster.
