I just bought this 1998-99 hardtail, and I'm wondering, is the body ash?

Is there a way to know from the serial number?

Looks like it. Don't they usually have a thinner gloss though?

Yes it is.

The serial number won't tell you, but your eyes will. Ash has that strongly marked grain. Alder is much less distinctively grained, on average.

Compare a few on this website and you'll soon get your eye in. On this page, for example, the Sienna Sunburst finish is on an ash body; the three-color sunburst is alder:

Thanks for the quick replies! I paid $700 w/ hard shell case - I think I got a pretty good deal.

Nice guitar! I've come to believe that ash looks nice, but alder is a better tone wood. YMMV?
