Hey StratHeads-

Oh...The illusive search for the holy tone. Everything stated in the above post is correct to the best of my knowledge- I too am no SRV Historian but I do consider him my biggest influence and a seventh level Guitar God. SRV Influenced me to find my own sound and I am happy with the direction I am headed.

I just replaced the pickups in my 2000 MiM with Texas Special and I am very happy with them. They have that nice mid range boost and the Ka-Chunk I was looking for. I also like the little bit of twang in the bridge position. All in all I am very happy with them.

Guitarist are never going to stop trying to emulate SRV's tone and style. Every night I go to a Jam night there is at least one Bolero Hat wearing, Cowboy Boot kicking Stevie Ray Wannabe busting out a version of "Cold Shot" or "Pride and Joy". My hope for them is that they will drop their act and find their voice- they will never be satisfied with just being a poser.

Hi cwpainter,

Well said, I have been debating between getting Texas Specials and Fat 50's. The dude from the Guitar shop I go to highly recommends Fat 50's
they are his favorite too.

Thanks for the info :)

Regards.

2 of my guitars have texas specials ,my MIA and my SRV strat .I really like the pickups alot, but they arent for everyone.I guess Fender knew this and decided to design more pickups that sounded different.I agree that there are alot of myths out there about SRV and so many people are in search for that tone.I play Texas Specials because i like them.i also like SRV the man and his music.i would never try to emulate his tone because there is only 1 Stevie Ray and there were so many factors going on when he played guitar .He played with big strings ,high action and one thing alot of people miss is that he played at such high volumes too.The way he played for sure was the biggest part, that strong vibrato of his was awesome. There is a reason that whenever someone comes up that is compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan its like the kiss of death to their career. There will only be one Stevie .

His amps and pedals had alot to do with his tone too. His tone changed thougout the years too. Remember he used a sh*tload of different amps.

Hey StratHeads-

You know who else has a great "Texas Tone" is Henry Garta of Los Lonely Boys. I believe his main strat is a MIM but I dont know what kind of pick-ups he has in it. Great tone !

I had heard that he plays a MIM strat also. I'd be intersted fo find out more about that. I don't know much about Los Lonely Boys though. I don't enjoy them much at all.

Acording to uberproaudio.com his guitars are custom. He uses a MIM body, puts a 62 reissue neck on it , drops some Texas Specials in and uses "really nice quality parts",so its a MIM body partscaster,

Why wont people accept one simple fact. No ammount of money is going to make you sound like your hero, your not ever going to be him. I understand the desire to emmulate and there by flatter such hero. I'd just find a setup i liked and play it. If that includes a signature guitar then so what, theres nothing wrong in that. Just set about making it your own. Dont fall for the endless hype of this will make you sound like so&so. That kind of marketing is holding gear development back. If i liked something then i wouldnt let any opinion bar my own influence my decision.

Very true. It's not like Robert Johnson had an amazing "rig".

I agree with tis, though I will say I picked up a Tubescreamer in the past, because I wanted some of that SRV style punch in my tone. But I didn't expect it to make me sound like him, but add an element of his sound to mine. Might be cutting hairs, as it were. Of coarse i found out over time, that i like to play Guitar-cable-amp as much as possible, so the pedal sits in a box by my amps, with more than a couple other lost souls, only occasionally brought out, and fiddled with.

I bought a kerry king jcm800, by no means the best incarnation of the JCM amps. Just to get a good highgain sound. Much the same as you Twelvebar i heard something i liked on someone elses rig and saw where it would serve my purpose. Theres nothing at all wrong in that. I just want people to have a bit of sense and not fall for the constant marketing ploys used in the industry.
