Does the Stratocaster XII sound anything like the old Fender Electric XII's?

Not really--the pickups are different. It sounds quite Strat-like to me.

But you could get some similar sounds--as it's still a solid body 12 sting.

I'd like one.

I kind of figured as much--the Electric XII had custom split coils, right?

Maybe I'm just listening to "Stairway" too much lately, but I can't get that 12-string sound out of my head... that's the main reason I was wondering.

Yes, it did.

And they gave a humbucking effect, but kept some of the tone of the single coil.

This is kinda coincidental because I just bought a Strat XII last night. I was looking at the Squier Venus XII's, they are similar to the Electric XII. I settled on the Strat tho.

An octave generator/divider pedal would be cheaper, and a bit more versitile. Just a thought

You're probably right, but I tend not to like 'artificial' guitar sounds--besides a Boss OS-2 (usually set to light overdrive), the only other pedal I have is an AC-3 that gets a horrible "acoustic" tone, but is nice sometimes for giving it more attack. Plus I like the 12-string feel, although I've really only played a few cheap acoustics at the store...

I'm still totally jealous of anyone who has an Electric XII (is that yours, or did you just take it from the web?), but as long as the Strat has a good sound I'd consider getting one. I play a Standard Strat now (so obviously the "Strat sound" wouldn't bother me ;)), so it would be a bit of a splurge, but considering how nice my $300 guitar is--great tone, even from a cheap amp, and easily the most comfortable neck I've ever played--I'd happily sell my soul to Fender (more/less colorful metaphors may apply).

Anyone by any chance have a sound sample?

Most have a hard time with chords.

Where the heck did you find a Venus XII?

I use a Electro-Harmonix Classics POG, and I gotta tell you, I have no complaints at all. It is on the pricey side, but it handles everything I need quite well. I know they make a Mini pog as well thats about $100 cheaper. It seems almost everyone I've tried has its own strong point. The Boss handles the low frequencies well, but is a bit lacking on the higher one, and the Electro Mini Pog is reverse, better for the higher frequencies (which I think is where most people want to hear it). THe Classic is great all around, and you can go really far up and down, a couple octaves each way. I played a XII, it was pretty cool, but its something I dont think Id use all that much. Plus I dont have the patience with 12 strings, tuning them takes all day, and intonation tends to be a hastle. But if what you play would be served well with a XII, have at it. Good luck.

And the ones I've tried have trouble tracking higher notes, and they tend to be too noisy for what I want to do with them--but that depends what you're playing on them.

I love the feel of the 12 string though.
