I have a Floyd Rose Strat, and I'm tired of the difficult string changes... Is it possible to replace a Floyd Rose Tremelo w/ a Hardtail? Can you do a direct swap, or would it require major rework?

If the hardtail isn't an option, can I swap it w/ a standard Stratocaster bridge?

Thanks...

Hi allstond, welcome to the Forum.

Kahler sell a conversion plate to turn a Floyd into a Kahler trem. I think that would work for their hardtail too, but check this website to be sure:

http://www.wammiworld.com/PL-4%20and%205.html

I have dim memory there's other manufacturers offering a similar solution too, so have a search around. Seems lots of people want to be rid of their Floyds!

Cheers - C

+1!

I can't imagine why! I owned a guitar with a FR bridge for two weeks and sold it back for my Strat. I honestly don't see what's so great about them, other than they don't go out of tune as quick as regular trem systems. :?

A properly setup original floyd rose guitar will never and I mean NEVER (because I own a few) will go out of tune till the string is so used that it breaks..... just wanted to clarify that :)

I agree. I have found the Floyd Rose to be practically bulletproof. I have abused them for years with NO problem whatsoever. There are some versions of it that are not as good as others, but as long as you have a decent one, you should be good.

If you are not a tremolo user or "dive bomber" then you really do not need a locking tremolo system like the Floyd Rose. You should ask your local luthier if they can convert it and ask for a quote. I am sure that there are some issues with the conversion that unless you really know what you are doing, you wouldn't attempt.

I will always have a guitar in my collection with a double locking tremolo like a Floyd just because some of the music I play has a lot of dive bombs. I have never had any problems with Floyd Rose Tremolo systems. Yeah changing strings is a pain in the butt. I think I have been luck because mine were all built well.

Of course some of my newer compositions are leaning more towards being bluesy and not requiring the use of a Floyd, just a lot of bends. RK

Thanks. Appreciate the info.

I agree - I've never had issues w/ the Floyd... and once it's tuned it's rock solid. I just hate the 30 minute sting changes! And I don't play anything that really needs a tremelo. Was just hoping there was an "easy" fix. :)
