Every time I hear this question I can,t answer. There are so many increadable gutiarists. How do you pick whos best. The gutiarists who influnced me the most have been SRV, Hendrix, T Bone Walker, Freddie King, John Lee Hooker. Are they the best, I don,t think so but they are who inspier me and who I enjoy watching and playin.

The last time we were to list just one guitarist.

Five is too hard, man!

What does "best" mean? Seems it means "most popular" or "most influential.

Van Halen/Hendrix = changed the guitar playing world
for ever!!! no body past or present even comes close to
these two. you may have your personal favorites but the
bottom line is we owe these two our guitar playing lives.

It's an extremely personal choice. If you would choose by being analytical, and go by technique and skills, it would lean toward the Vai, Satriani's, etc. Buy "to me", I dont like listening to them. I prefer players who have feel and emotion in their playing, and those players for the most part cant compete with the flying finger players. But when I listen to musicians, I want to feel something. In studying blues, i hear time and time again, its in the rests where the soul of the music comes out more than the notes. WHen I hear SRV, Hendrix, Peter Green, Gilmore, CLapton, etc, I think of expression. WHen I hear Satriani, Vai, I think of algebra class. It doesnt mean I cant be impressed, and at time envious of their skill, but I listen to them from the position of study, as opposed to enjoyment. Kind of like jazz, love to hear the skills, but I just dont get it on the pure enjoyment level, and I grew up with it, my father has been a huge jazz fan since I can remember. So, with that whole long preamble out of the way, my top five for enjoyment are;
(in no particular order)
Slash
SRV
Gilmore
Hendrix
Lindsey Buckingham

I have to add, that the one player who would be considered a virtuouso player, but I feel can cross over into enjoyment is Eric Johnson.

Like I said though, it's very personal choice for everyone, and that list changes all the time.
