You cant always tell by the serial no' with Japanese instruments. They used loads of different methods. Some of which im sure were devised by some derranged lovecraft'esque criminaly insane person. A friend of mine had a similar problem fender customer services sorted it out.

That looks fake to me.

Those tuners look like those used on many early '70s Strat copies.
It could be made in Japan, but not officially by Fender.

The headstock shape is wrong it looks halfway between a 50's strat and a tele.

like the guys say, lotta stuff that looks wrong.
another is the text for 'stratocaster' on the decal seems broken up. Not at all like a real deal. Infact that whole decal looks off to me.

$60.00 should have let you know it wasn't real.

Dunno what this proves, but I have exactly those same tuners on an '80s Squier neck. And it also has that same screen printed logo, rather than a decal - though mine says Squier, of course.

Mine is similar, not quite the same, in the shape of the headstock, though mine also has trussrod adjustment at the nut, not the heel. And I certainly don't have a stripy nut like that!

I just wouldn't be quite so fast to right it off as a total fake. A lot of odd combinations came out of that Fujigen factory in the '80s, and you sometimes get the feeling Fender didn't always have a completely tight grip on the reins all the time.

Though "Made by. JAPAN" is certainly novel. Maybe this was the Fujigen nightshift doing a little work on their own behalf...

Cheers - C

Possibly Fujigen? Those good folks'd be embarrassed by that piece of work, IMO.
