I read somewhere that you can't change the pickup covers on the SCN's or they will ruin the pickups. Is this true?

What happens if you try to take them off and replace them?

From what I uderstand, the pickup is potted (in either wax or a hard plastic), so if you try to remove the cover you run the risk of pulling the whole pickup apart. Its a staked humbucker as opposed to a single coil. The single coil just has the cover that comes right off, and under it the poles bobbins and wires are wrapped with black fabric tape. SCN's like I said are surrounded with the potting, i believe its wax, but it may be plastic, I'm not sure, so if you get the cover off, the inside is incased in the potting agent. Remove the casing, and the pickup can fall apart. That's how most humbucker and stacked humbuckers are anyway. I do all my on mod's (excluding cutting wood, at least for now). I change things on my strat on a fairly regular basis (it's become almost as big of an addiction as playing is), so I research wiring and pickups on a regular basis. I know I came across information before saying that you cant remove SCN covers, I dont rememeber why it said, but I'm assuming its' for the same reason taking covers off of some humbucker, and noiseless single coils (stacked humbucker, whatever).

I don't think the scn's are stacked humbuckers. All the information I've read indicates that they are noiseless single coil pickups. Regardless, I probably won't change them.

Noiseless single coils are stacked humbucker, they all are, that's how they cancel out the 60cycle hum.
** (Except for Lace, that's a bit different)
They start by pretty much wiring a conventional single coil, but after they finish wrapping the wire, they wrap some in the other direction to cancel out the hum. They're stacked because this all happens on the same pickup, as opposed to a traditional humbucker that places 2 single coils next to each other, wrapped in opposite directions, then wire them together.

Oh, I didn't know that. Well they still sound good to my ears so I'm quite happy. I was thinking about changing the pickup covers to black, but I guess I can live with aged white.

I had SCN's on my american deluxe, I liked them, although they are one of those love it or hate it pickup. I went to regular single coils, because I just couldnt find a noiseless that had any personality. Untill I played Dimarzio Area 58/61's. To me they are the perfect pickup, quieter than a humbucker, and a real tone. I went to my luthiers place, he has a real vintage 58 there he was doing something to, and compared the area58 wiht the real deal. you have to really listen to find the difference (except that the dimarzio's were quieter than a mouse pissing on cotton). Yeah, you'r just going to have to live with the covers. Although, you could find some black adhesive tape, or sticker strips, and cut them to cover your covers. They may even sell something like that.

Hey, now that's a good idea. I'll probably go ahead and do that. The reason I wanted to change the covers was because I didn't want my guitar to end up too much like SRV's. Mine looks the same except for the fretboard which is maple. And you're right about the pickups being a love/hate thing. Although you lose some characteristics of the stratocaster sound, it makes up for it with its versatility and balanced tone. That's my opinion anyway.

No doubt, then handle distortion a bit better too. The only issue I had with them is the magnetic pull, I had to keep them pretty far from the strings, or it killed sustain. I have a 6 inch metal ruller with 64ths of an inch measurements I use for setups, and when I go to measure pickup height from the strings, it practically pulls the ruler out of my hand. But, i think that the strong magnetic pull will allow you to cover your pickups with tape or whatever without affecting the performance.... Now I'm wondering if they sell adhesive covers like that. Glad I could help

Just a bit of wax holds the SCN cover on. Place it face down in about 3/16" of lightly boiling water for 15 to 20 seconds and it will slide right off. I replaced my chrome cover with and aged vintage look. still sound awesome.

There are waxed on. Just set them in 3/16" of slightly boiling water and they slide right off.

What do you think becomes of the wax potting when the pickup is totally immersed in water heated to 100ºC?

How do you slightly boil water?

If the manufacturer thinks it is a good idea to pot the PUP it seems a bit of a shame to unpot it.
