I've always taken it off the first time I change strings but I just thought of something. If you take it off and your stomach comes in contact with the bridge block would that effect sustain/tone? I've been seeing all the "improve sustain" post lately and just about all of them has someone saying something about the bridge block. Rather it be replace with a Callaham or blocking it. I would think taking off the cover and the touching it would stop it from resonating or transfering or whatever to the body. I doubt you could even hear the difference but I just thought I'd see what everyone else think.

I don't think that it adds much sustain but I do believe it keeps the springs from vibrating and making annoying noises acoustically and in some cases even through the amp. This vibrating usually occurs when using 5 springs instead of just three but still letting the tremolo float. Letting your clothing touch the springs will obviously dampen them.

If that happened to me I'd be adding 320 pounds of sustain......
