evening folks,
anyone know how to tell how old a Strat is by using the serial number?

M = Mexico
N = 1990's, Z = 2000's
5 = as 1995
the rest - if anything - is debated conjecture

keep in mind that the n5 could involve some calendar overlap, so might be early 96 also. But as a general rule 01GT is right. :D

Yeah, no one has decoded the later numbers.

Just for completeness' sake...
J = Made in Japan
K = Made in Korea
If there is no M, J or K, and the SN simply starts with the E for eigties, N for nineties or Z for this decade it is made in USA.
There are several good reference books out there that attempt a more thorough explanation of the serial number system throughout Fender history. They are fun and enlightening reads, my personal favorite being the Stratocaster Chronicles. Another excellent reference for Strat freaks is "The Fender Stratocaster" by A.R. Duchossoir, which gets updated and reprinted pretty regularly. Hal Leonard would have either of these, along with a slew of other good books for the history buff.

This guy is putting in a lot of work to spam us with this website. I just searched his posts, same pattern. Start a new thread about a SN#, then wait to post a reply with the website. These spammers are sure getting creative. :evil:

Japanese Strats don't all start with a J, Also E serials are not exclusive to USA made strats. Many Japanese and Korean Fenders as well as Squiers have E serials. Also haven't heard of Korean guitars have a K prefix to denote Korea.

The Lite Ash series was made in Korea and they have a serial format like so:
