My Clapton strat came with a block of wood behind the trem to imobilize it.
The hardtails don't sound the same as the trem strats, so if you don't use it
do what Clapton does & block it.

I know what you mean but can you divebomb with fingers. I dont use a tremelo bar but i can see the attraction in it.

How does it sound different? Does it sound better or worse?

The trem is not just for fancy tricks and EVH type stuff. Listen to someone like Jeff Beck. The man is a master of the tremolo. Yes you can do tremolo with your fingers but the bend can only go up. With the right feel you can do a very expressive tremolo that goes up and below the pitch and it can have a very good sound.

I've got five springs in, and no bar - just grab the trem-unit and pull - or hit the top for some cool effects (Fender J-Strat with Floyd Rose locking)

(Props to the Freeway Jam mention above)

It sounds different, i use 5 springs so the bridge is flat on the body.
You got less tuning problems with this set-up. I like the sound of the
springs in the body, gives you a reverberating sound esspecialy unplug-
ged.

The hardtail strat does sound different. I have one & it is lacking a little something. It either wants the ash body of my Tele or the springs of my Clapton to give it some sparkle. So I play slide on it & the sound of glass on steel makes it all better! (of course there may be a billion other things involved too, but.......)

I have 5 on right now and seems to be allright as far as tune goes, it slips in and out but that stems from another problem, have a bone nut that is kinda binding onthe strings and my last winds were crap..Make sure to check intonation after adding springs...not a pro here but educated guess!!!
