The one i had was called a contemporary start and i got it in 84 or 85. It doesn't quite match any of your descriptions because you say the tem 1 system had microtuners by which i assume you mean thumb wheels on the bridge. Then you said it's not as elaborate as the sys 2 and 3. Well, mine was less elaborate than all of them because it has no microtuners. It did however have that locking nut that was locked with a lever. To describe it further, it was white metallic, black head stock, 22 frets/12" radius, HSS, and the trem rode in a knife edge affair that was under the pickguard away from sight, and there was a huge area under the bridge and guard routed away for this. The guitar had a vert thin sound that i struggled with for the several years i used it during what was probably the most active gigging era in my life. i used the heck out of that strat, but i finally moved on to more traditional strats and my tone improved greatly.

On a side note, the locknut broke regularly and i once had to tape it up to get thru a gig. I called fender and they sent me new "improved" parts several times as they kept breaking. Finally the asked me to come to thier location which at that time was somewhere out around diamondbar...can't recall exactly, but out that way. they wanted to see it and see whats going on with it. They then gave me more parts after that several times till i gave up and sold it. They soon after gave up on that thing because it was obviously a horrible design.

i really think looking back that that guitar's biggest problem tone-wise was that bridge. it was a monstrosity in the way it mounted and i'm sure thats why it was thin sounding. Not a direct enough contact between the strings and the wood.

BJ according to your link my 85 MIJ is a 27-4302. I paid $300 for it in 1985 and it came with a gig bag and a cable.

That one has the jack mounted on the top fhop not in the side like the other Contemporay's.

Sounds like it the others you can spot right away because of the out put jack placement and the headstocks are black.
