The hot rails is a good choice. They're really warm sounding and cancel a lot of hum. They sound great too... like a humbucker in the neck.

I put one of those Duncan Design ones in this project-Peavey predator I had (in the neck) and it sounded great. I'd highly recommend it. The DD one is only $30, it'd be worth a shot, and if you don't like it, oh no... $30 on a pick up. (It's also tap-able.)

I recently bought a MIM Deluxe Strat on eBay that has THREE Seymour Duncan hot rails mini Humbuckers on it. Last night a bought a Vox AD30VT Amp and i cannot tell you how awesome the sound is. Truly incredible!

Second, assuming I cant match a neck humbucker, I'd consider alternatives, including some of the Seymor Duncan mini-humbuckers like the Hot Rails or others. How do you like these? Do they perform like a typical humbucker? What humbucker should I consider?

Thanks.

I have a Hot Rails/cool rails/cool rails setup in one of my guitars. The hot rails is a great pup and I really like it but it does not have the power of a true HB IMO.

The style of music you play will determine the pickup, but a good bridge pu from Seymour Duncan is the JB. The neck pu most people pair with that is the jazz.

From Dimarzio, I like the super distortion bridge paired with a PAF pro.

I'm a big Duncan fan too...I got a set of rails in my '96 MIM and I love them. Much sweeter sound than even my Fender VN's. In fact originally I had 2 VN's in my MIM at the neck and mid with a Duncan at the bridge and I liked the Duncan so much that I went all Duncan and the VN's are now in my Squire Standard. That said, I also have to agree with the iguana in that I don't really think they sound like traditional hb's either. Without getting too technical, there's some inescapable laws of physics that come into play here. The sound of any pickup is determined by the type and size of magnet used and the size and number of windings and very simply you can't get the same amount of material that's in a traditional hb to fit in a package the physical size of a single coil (at least not without some inter-dimensional manipulation from a cat! LOL!). The sound of something like a Duncan rail does sound much more like a traditional HB then a traditional single coil but it's not quite the same with all other things being equal.

Now I would add one thing to this. Regardless of what type of pickup you use or even what guitar you use, remember that a good portion of your sound actually comes from your fingers more than anything else. As I've often said before, Eric Clapton for example would still sound like Eric Clapton regardless of whether he was using a $4000 Custom Shop instrument or a $200 Squire or even a Les Paul (and he did use a lot of Gibbys early on)....he sounds like EC because he -is- EC. It's something to consider.

Okies...just my $.02 worth as usual,
Jim
