Anyone know if its possible to convert from a current HSS setup to Single coil? I currently have a 2001 MIM HSS that I want to put Texas specials on, anyone see any problems stemming from the conversion or know anyone who has done it to their HSS? :?:

not very hard to do. You just need to get a new SSS pickguard.

I knew that, my concern is the excess cavity the humbucker will be leaving, as the single coil is much smaller, not sure if the larger cavity will affect the tone of the guitar.

You could also just coil tap the humbucker, or get one capable of doing so, and a new pot/switch.

Many now have H/S/H pickup routing anyway so it make no difference.

1. If you want to change the look, its the pickguard and a suitable hot single-coil.
2. If not, have the humbucker configured to split.

The cheapest option, #1.
Next cheapest, #2.
Tapping the coil(s), time is money.

Real tightwads like me would just remove the threaded poles on one coil.
Just make sure that the coil left active isn't reversed.

I did that mod to my Texas Special Fat strat a year ago.I just couldnt warm up to the humbucker.I purchased a Texas Special bridge pickup ,a new pickguard and a 3 way switch. The strat came with a Super Switch which split the humbucker.I got on fenders website and found the sss configuration and made sure all of my pots and caps were compatable. It was easier for me to unwire everything from the guitar and mount everything in the pickguard then reinstall it .You will need to adjust your pickup heights again.I was so glad i did it , i wanted a Texas Special sss anyway, but they had the Fat strat on clearance for 550 in 04 so i jumped on it.

Personally I would put the old pickguard complete with pickups and wiring away and buy new pickguard, pickups, 5or 3 way switch, and pots.

I agree. I have a drawer with 3 or 4 bagged up pickguards, neatly labelled. If you ever want to sell, you have a fast easy way to restore it to original.

+1. Most strats have that or at least the HSS routing, so you should be jsut fine. I'm going to do this with my MIM Strat later this year, so just get the pups and pickguard and you're good to go.

I also put Texas Single coils on my Mexican Strat but changed the Humbucker into a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gate and my guitar sound amazing now i am going to change the bridge.

I do not know what to do with extra Single coil.
