I wish i could play like i did in my early 20's. I think im the only 30something guitarist that admits to diminishing ability. By the time im 40 i'll be struggling on a 3 string open C chord at this rate.
I didn't know ability could diminish

John Mayer. I'm not talking about his "pop friendly hits" I'm talking about his awesome blues and funky guitar playing. I bought the John Mayer Trio Live album and it is incredible. That guy can play the guitar.

It's all about practice, and then when you've practiced enough that you COULD play like him... you'll by then have a style that's all your own and you'll just play like a phenomenal "you"

Re: John Mayer
I love to listen to him play, but can't stand watching him!
I freely admit to diminished ability. I was a shredder in the early 80's. EVH, YJM, Lynch, Becker, etc. But in '86 I had a motorcycle accident, got run over by a semi, that broke my back, and alot of other things. That caused a lot of nerve damage all over my body, but most noticeably in my arms and hands. I basically had to re-learn to play, and to this day I cannot attain the speed and fluidity I use to have. My left hand fingers aren't as fast, and my pick control can be spotty at times.
I still love shredders, but my own style has taken a more blues oriented turn. I now have a more lyrical, expressive style. I don't try to cram 48 notes into each measure anymore, I prefer to make a couple notes sing. Now it's more Carlos, Jimmy, Eric and Jeff, with a dash of SRV and when I'm feeling really good, Walter Trout.
Give him a listen sometime, that dude makes a Strat sing, cry and cuss, all at the same time!

I think it's great that people wish they could play like them because he wishes he could play like a lot of other people and instead of becoming them he ended up becoming himself.

It's 5am EST and I'm on youtube again.. I know, terrible.. But, I found a lot of really cool videos of Mayer- stuff I never thought I'd see. He is doing a lot of covers these days and using the correct guitars to do them. Check it out! He plays 'Cold Shot' using the SRV #1 Replica and much to my surprise (and amusement) he does 'Panama' with the EVH Frankenstein Replica!!

I like to learn as much as I can from as many people as I can and blend them into my own style.
